Billboard's horrible review for "Sexyback"

"SexyBack"
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Producer(s): Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Danja
Label: Publishers: various Jive

Justin Timberlake claims he wants to push pop boundaries with upcoming second solo album "FutureSex/LoveSounds," but launch single "SexyBack" is more likely to jolt nerve endings. Yeah, we get it: Release an event single you know radio will embrace before getting to the meat of the matter, but really. This meandering melody-free jam is atrocious. Timberlake is unidentifiable with his grossly distorted vocal as Timbaland whoops and hollers alongside, in what is essentially a four-minute loop. Timberlake has a lot to offer—as a potential savior of solo male pop—but here he appears to tease, if not to ridicule, radio's lust/need for him. Impact: 10. Respect: less than zero. Tacky return, dude. —Chuck Taylor

It's one of the shittest songs I've ever heard. Seriously. The idiot is trying so hard to be something he's not. I can't believe some people were even drawing parallels between him and Prince! Prince is a musical genius, whereas Timberlake is ALL HYPE - a fast-food artist.

Even in Prince's current state of relaxation and underperfoming (on records), the guy wipes the floor with this SexyBack bollocks. Comparing even the stuff on "3121" to this song is like comparing Dylan to Dave Matthews, Led Zep to Nickleback, or Sly Stone to Usher. It's dooopid.

People were actually speaking highly of the song in the first SexyBack thread. I was worried. I thought I had stumbled across a JT fansite by mistake. Now we're all sane again. lol

That's why what needs to be said has to be said. I can't believe people actually ACCEPT the dross that is churned out today - simply because it is deemed 'popular'. We have to put up with so much shitty popular music. If it's horrible, call it that - don't try and dress it up because it's done by someone with a 'name'. And, besides, Timberlake has never done a decent song, and like I said, is nothing more than one fast-food artist among a generation of 'em.

Good thing we have a critics review to clear things up...change the way we feel about things.
Anyway, that's not the kind of song that most critic can speak highly of. There's not much to it.

Even still...it's a hot dance track and it will do well. That doesn't change.

well, whatevs, I like it.

I like it in the way that I enjoy Taco Bell and crap summer movies like Poseidon. While sometimes I want something high quality and authentic, I also can appreciate the other side of the spectrum.

Do I think it's some earth shattering, ground breaking, bold song? Nope. But it's light, and silly and lotsa fun for a hot summer night of dancing. Good enough for me.

The problem is the hype JT is trying to create and the fact that based on the first single, he can't back it up:

"I realize that I have a platform to push the sound of pop music. That's the only responsibility that I put on myself in recording the album," Timberlake told a news conference at the start of a promotional tour.

"If I'm not going to push it, then who's going to push it?"
The first single from the album, "SexyBack," features a pounding bass beat and electronic sounds, and does not include the falsetto singing that has become Timberlake's trademark. He said, however, that the album featured "a lot" of such singing.

"The best way I can describe that song is say David Bowie and David Byrne decided to do a cover of James Brown's 'Sex Machine,' " Timberlake told reporters.

If 50 cent came out talking mess about how his upcoming album was going to push the sound of rap music and cite some of the pioneers like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five or PE, only to come out with the same boolsh!t, then he would get ripped to shreds, rightfully so.

Sexyback ain't pushing any boundaries, so he needs to stop lying and let the music speak for itself.

Meh, not about him in particular but you know people forgive some bad shit when somebody's hot. I said before his music's alright, I just really think this song's junk. I'm not trying to be an ass, I just can't see the love for this song. Usually, I can chalk it up to difference in taste, but this one? I dunno. I can't hear it. And, no, I didn't buy or like New Power Soul when it came out.

lol

would i fuck him? i dunno, maybe. he's hot and it would make for great cocktail hour talk. that said, i don't care for his music but i like this song. i like it a lot. everything i heard from the last cd was pretty much crap and i didn't care for it. this song sounds different from that stuff so maybe that's the difference for me.

but there's plenty of pop stars i like who aren't attractive and there's a ton of hot pop stars out there whom i don't like. i don't think the attractive thing holds much weight.

Very true. They already have a package that they want him to neatly fit in. For that reason alone, I like that he went in the other direction.

Why do you insist on this theory? I think it's way off.

Alright, I do wanna fuck him, but that ain't why I like him.

I also liked JC Chasez' solo album and that guy AIN'T hot. At all.

I also still rock out to the Spice Girls. You know me well enough to know that I have no desire to hit ANY of that.

I just like whack pop music sometimes. JT falls into that category.

Oh, one last thing. Nick Lachey is fucking seXXXy to me but I find nothing redeeming in his music at all. So, yeah, I'm not buying your theory

Yeah, Nick's hot. I wouldn't buy his music, but I'd mess around with him. Well, if I knew he was coming over, I'd buy the shit, put it on, mess around, then throw the shit out again.

Uh, believe me, if I can admit to liking Layne Staley and Iggy Pop, I could surely admit to wanting Justin. It's just not the case. I'm usually not one to take the time to dismiss somebody on here. I'd rather take time to talk about somebody I like. I think anyone would tell you that. He just brings out the worst in me.
