An overlooked gem: Take 6 "Beautiful World" Yes, I know: This seminal a cappella group, known for merging traditional gospel with jazz arrangements, a cappella instrumentation and -- on occasion -- really slick production released another album this year. I haven't gotten it yet.
You could say I'm afraid of the inevitable letdown. After all, how do you follow-up "Beautiful World?" I mean, T6 has a knack for successively good albums that touch upon different nuances and styles. And, the brothers likely can sneeze more breathtakingly than I'll ever sing. The disc is full of covers given rich arrangments. "Fragile" by Sting is a standout. I love it. "BW" was produced by Marcus Miller, the bassist-producer known for some of Luther's classics, in addition to hits for many, many other artists. The man is an industry unto himself. Still, with all the accolades he's won in his own right, Miller, found a way to stay true to the artistry of T6 that preceded "BW." The harmonies are there, the strong singing and improvisation, the gospel elements -- they're all there. In many cases, Miller just added an element of sophistication and depth to the jazzier elements -- and his trademark "bank-bank" bass sound to the funkier tunes. He also added Lalah Hathaway. Bless his heart. What she does to her daddy's hit "Someday We'll Be Free" with T6 is pure magic. Gossamer vocals over a near-anthemic arrangement. In some passages, they sound like the wind. I strongly encourage you all, in addition to picking up their new deal, "Feels Good" (which think is a return to their earlier, simpler work), to RUN OUT and get "Beautiful World" for a snapshot of musical mastery. It truly is amazing. Repeated listens will bring rewards. | |
