Definitely A fan right here, he's one of the major reasons I got into jazz, actually one of the major things that turned me into a serious music fan. Mingus Ah Um was one the first jazz albums I listened to all the way through and is still probably my favorite of his but I also love Mingu Mingus Mingus Mingus, Black Saint And The Sinner Lady, Blues and Roots, hell most of his stuff.

any recom, endations, any MUSTHAVES! Cheers musiclovers Mingus never made a bad album, but these are my favourites - in no order Ah Um Black Saint Lady Sinner Tijuana Moods The Clown Blues & Roots Oh Yeah Mingus Plays Piano Let My Children Hear Music Cumbia Jazz Fusion Mingus At Antibes Complete Concert Changes One Changes Two I also highly recommend a Hal Wilner Mingus tribute album called Weird Nightmare. Under the Underdog's a literary masterpiece. [Edited 7/13/06 0:11am] There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. i've listed these several times on the org. might be a little too heavy as an introduction to mingus, but these are very intimate recordings and are among my favs. i think Ah Um is a safe introduction for anyone curious of that Mingus sound. . [Edited 7/13/06 2:03am]

Ah-Um If you want to start with just one, this is my suggestion, too. Let us know what you think! "Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive."

Ah-Um If you want to start with just one, this is my suggestion, too. Let us know what you think! My current fav on that record is Self-Portrait in Three Colors. Shortest piece on the record but it's 3 minutes of sheer musical beauty. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Nah. that's not it, though the title is close. the song i was thinking of is titled Portrait featuring Jackie Paris. you can hear a sample here. http://www.rhino.com/stor...ber=71402# and i think the best intro to mingus is the anthology 13 pictures: this really shows his range from Cumbia Jazz and Fusion to Myself when i am real. i will say you'd have to be willing to part with at least $25, it being a double disc and all, but totally worth it. nice packaging and linear notes too!

I'm no jazz expert (not by a long shot), but I listen to this one from my partner's collection occasionally:
Good stuff! | |

Sorry to leave you hangin' bro but they had the nerve to want me to do some work around here. Nice piece but Jackie's got one of those voices you've really gotta have a taste for. Check out his take on 'Round Midnight or When I Fall In Love. I don't get it. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."
