Wutcha got? Here's the birthday booty I got:

well, since you ask...

my grandfather passed in January and my dad and his sisters were cleaning out his basement a few weeks ago. On Saturday I recieved a box of about 100 33 1/3 rmps and 100 78's.

Most of it is kind of scratched up and the SL-1200 doesn't spin at 78, but there are a few gems in the bunch...

the 78's are mostly swing era. Lots of Glenn Miller, Gene Krupa, Tommy Dorsey and the like. My favorite 78 is a Dr. Suess record called Gerald McBoing-Boing (below right) that I've never heard of.

Paligap is gonna freak out over the Gerald McBoing Boing disc.

I'm especially drooling over the Henry Mancini Peter Gunn disc.
One of the coolest instrumentals ever.

I love Peter Gunn too and there are bunch of tracks on this one that are new to me.

I really wish I could play 78s. There are a bunch of cool discs in the collection in addition to ones I listed. Cannonball Aderly, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Fats Waller, Woody Herman, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Kenton, Les Brown, the list goes on.

Gerald McBoing Boing was actually my original avatar on this site(that cartoon kid)...but with a much different design:

Gerald was the only character that Dr Suess didn't create for a book, it was just the subject of that record....

Gerald was the only character that Dr Suess didn't create for a book, it was just the subject of that record....

...until 1950, when he sold the idea to an up-and-coming animation company called UPA...It was formed by a group of maverick animators and ex-Disney artists that wanted to break away from the realistic design that Disney animation represented, and form a new, modern and more stylized type of animation... they created a new design for Gerald (much different from the Suess design), won the Oscar for "Best Animated Short" in 1951 and revolutionized animation in the process. They would go on to create Mr Magoo, and UPA alumni later moved on to work on animation like Rocky and Bullwinkle, the Charlie Brown/ Peanuts specials, Roger Ramjet, and Yellow Submarine:




a lot of people tended to call this new style limited animation, but that's not what UPA was really intending---- they just felt that any type of graphic art could be represented by animation, including a lot of the caricature and poster art of the time (late 40's -early 50's), so a lot of their animation reflected that influence...Later, studios like Hanna Barbera took the idea but used it more as a financial and artistic short cut --using fewer frames and using economic backgrounds over and over was much cheaper to produce....in those cases, it really was limited animation)

anyway, I'm currently doing research for a book we're writing on the subject, and you may see me (and Elroy!) in a documentary on UPA that's currently being filmed...
