Mariah Carey "Glitter" her best work...... I know people think thats a crazy statement, because feel sales dictate whats good and whats not. And if there would have never been a Movie or a "breakdown" and all that nonsense, i think glitter easily was Mariahs first and only record where she seemed to try something different. Mariah though i love her to death has always stuck to the same formula, so at the end of the day, despite all her accolades and Number ones, she doesnt rank anywhere near the music icons of the last 30 years. Sure Glitter had some of that formula, but if u take away the Busta, ludacris and Fabolous and Dj clue involvement, its Mariahs most solid record throughout. It was Mariahs attempt at a theme record and i think she should have pushed that more in the record, instead of a few "rapper" detours, the involvement of Rick James and Cameo was a great move, and she should have went with that further, perhaps working with kool and the gang or the commodores.
But Glitter will always be associated with the "flop" movie, the Big Record Deal, the lack of sales in the states, though at last count it had a million here and about 3 million more worldwide, this record was HUGE in japan. So still to this day i can throw a track on from Glitter and listen to it, I cant say that about many of Mariahs songs, and Im a fan. I think she had the most fun with it and probably was the best reflection of her influences (80s R&B), but
the songs on her earlier albums are actually composed more thoroughly. Glitter

I agree but i think Mariah abandoned alot of her influences for the commercial world. I think songs like "If its Over", "the Wind", "Vanishing" from her first two CDS gave the flashes of Mariah at her best, and hopefully what one day, she will go back to when she realizes the "commercial" world is really bad! To be fair, there's other really great compositions on Glitter like Rick James "All My Life" and "Twister"

It is a good c.d. less commercial and more personal. The movie wasn't that bad neither.

"Vanishing"
One of my favorites, and the best of the debut album. "Todo está bien chévere" Stevie

rick james produced all my life? i never knew that. i love that song!! oh, i almost forgot to mention that i agree that this is her best cd! i love it. and think if it weren't for the film and all the drama it would have done better. [Edited 7/11/06 16:02pm]

I don't know if it's best, but is it better than Emotions...yes. It was a great departure from her classic formula. AT best, TEOM is as well. All that being said, Glitter is a solid soundtrack.

You have got to be kidding..that's her most mature album. I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the dirt.

Interesting topic.
I'm no fan, but I heard the record one time, and my friends were making fun of it & her, and I thought it sounded okay, better than a lot of her stuff. Wasn't there talk of her covering Prince for the movie? You can hear his influence on some of the songs. My Legacy

I would vote glitter as my second favorite behind Mimi. I am surprised that
most people here believe that glitter is very good. It goes to show that people on this forum are not swayed by record sales and public opinion. Glitter was a very good cd. I like never to far away, the rick james joint, lead the way, etc. I never saw the movie. The public unfairly dumped on her because of her situation and i think virgin records copped out because she was not the flavor of the moment and bailed out on her and bought her out. Virgin sucks. It was great to see her stick it in virgin's face with the mimi comeback. Big ups to mariah and her glitter cd. It was a very fun and feel good cd that you could jam to anytime. It was vastly her most underrate cd. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

I rented Glitter and I remember watching it and thinking, Its really not so bad. I also remember liking the music more after seeing the movie. At that time Mariah couldnt get any positive coverage so Glitter is still slept on by many. I like it alot but my favorite MC albums are still Emotions, Butterfly and Emancipation. But every album has at least 2 or 3 songs I just cant be without.

Didnt Mean To Turn You On I'm sorry but...did you really just say the MOVIE wasn't bad? I usually respect your taste a LOT...but...dog...that movie fuckin blows. cheesy as hell and the script makes "Showgirls" or "The Next Best Thing" look like "Casablanca." What was not so bad? I agree the music is good...and she's not the worst actress ever but that movie has to go. I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Personally I think Showgirls was worse but thats me. I agree with you about the movie, badjunkie. Heck, I want to make mad passionate love and babies with Mariah and grow old with her at the nusring home, but that movie was god-awful. Granted, crap like Showgirls, Hudson Hawk and Battlefield Earth was worse, but this movie didn't know whether it wanted to be like Purple Rain, A Star Is Born, or the Mariah Carey Story, and as a result was severly disjointed in a lot of parts. I will say that, even with that piece of crap "Loverboy" on the album, the rest of it was probably her most underrated work. I really loved the 80s-themed music of "All My Life" and "If We" (with Eric Benet), and her ballads (Never Too Far, Lead The Way, Reflections) were really strong. It's too bad that she had her breakdown around this time and wasn't really able to promote her album they way she could have.

Call me crazy, but I don't think the movie was that bad either I watched it just the other day and found myself enjoying many of the scenes. The main problem is that there is NO chemistry between Mariah and her love interest, that silly DJ guy.The other problem is,aside from "Twister" and "Never Too Far",there's not alot of memorable tunes here. She really needed a stronger set of songs, imo.

I LOVE GLITTER!!! I thought it was a step in the right direction for Mariah. I always love it when she funks it up a bit rather than straight ballads, ballads, ballads. All My Life is a TUNE and I really liked I Didn't Mean to Turn You On.
When I saw the film I was surprised that it wasn't as shite as everyone was making it out to be. As far as s film based around music goes I thought it wasn't bad (Grafitti Bridge) The Hottest chip of them all - www.hotchip.co.uk - Get down with Prince

That's the real story of Mariah. When she did her first cd she was commenting on how it was more slick than she wanted, and that when she got more control that she'd do something real. It's hard to imagine that she had plans like that, considering where she went. She's a great singer, but she came nowhere near what she could have done if she'd kept to the original plan. My Legacy

I LOVE Butterfly.
And ya'll know I can't stand Mooriah. So that says a lot. But I am digging a few tracks from Gutter. I play the hell out of her "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" Lance is SO a bottom
