The ROY AYERS thread

anotha baaad musician who is never being discussed in here: mr ROY AYERS. I have always liked his 60s playing, especially his contribution to herbie mann's "memphis underground". but his polydor material is pretty outstanding until 1979.
the albums:
- Ubiquity
- He's coming
- change up the groove
- a tear to a smile
- mystic voyage
- red, black and green
- coffy (soundtrack)
- you sent me

etc...
"Peace and Benz -- The future, made in Germany" peace

Roy Ayers is GREAT! I have his 2-CD "Evolution" compilation that came out in the mid-90s.His music is hypnotic and relaxing. His 1976 song "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" is one of the most intoxicating, mellow jams of all-time! I also love his 1977 jam "Running Away",which I actually heard in a nightclub last week (it's a kickass dance track).

I, too, love Roy Ayers. I've always loved the vibes and Roy's are always very beautiful. I have most of the albums listed above, plus others. Mystic Voyage is probably my favorite of them all...

Favorite Roy Ayers jams...

Running Away- It's imperative that you get to the dance floor when this one is on. This song used to dominate R&B radio the year it came out in 1977. How can you get that "dippy-do...run- run- run" line out of your head.

Red Black And Green - A great song in which Roy sort of took the riff from Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay".

Dont Stop The Feeling- Once again, essential dance floor stuff. Especially the long version

Coffy- Love the ultra funk vibe coming from the track. Ayers lays down a great solo on the vibraphone.

We Live In Brooklyn-This song slams hard. This sounds especially good when you're rolling in your ride with a quality sound system, This is one of them riding songs to just ride too.

Searching- Classic Ayers track which has a riff that Jermaine Jackson uses for his hit "Don't Take It It Personal". Also a rap group (their name escapes me now) sampled this song for their hit "Be A Father To Your Child"

Everybody Loves The Sunshine- More Classic Ayers. This song was sampled by Mary J. Blige for her song "My Life".

Roy Ayers has proven to be a very influential artist. His music is challenging yet accessible to the ear. Much props to him!!!
