Mark Antone Adams serves up his fleet-fingered lines with Slave, critically hailed as the cream of the '70s Ohio horn funk bands. In addition to his bass bombast on such Slave hits as "Slide," "Just a Touch of Love," and "Snap Shot," Mark can also be heard on Odyssey's 1982 smash "Inside Out." Currently, Adams continues to tour with the seven-piece Dayton, Ohio-based Slave, while working on a bass solo album.

How do you describe the groove?

From where I stand, the groove begins with bass and drums. In Slave, either [drummer] Steve Arrington or I would start a groove and it would inspire the rest of the band. That was the only way we knew how to do what we did; we seldom planned a groove. It was spontaneous.

How do you cultivate the groove?

What I do is listen for the spice between the hi-hat, snare, and foot-the overall ambience and the subliminal sounds.

How do you enhance the groove?

I've been fortunate in Slave that the band has always given me space to be a melody instrument and to lead the groove. I talk through my bass and step forward like a lead singer riffing; I'm constantly in freestyle mode. Steve calls it "annointing bass." I also look at my bass like a drum kit, using my thumb for the kick and my pops for the snare-like Larry Graham does. That's what I did on "Just a Touch of Love" [from Just a Touch of Love, Cotillion]. I don't know how Slave grooves like it does. It's hard to put into words, but it will always be in us.

From what i remember is that he was the one wearing a "slave"-printed shirt on an early-rehearsal and that print inspired the group to name themselves like that .
Not shure , but Drac or Floyd "The Brother Slide" Miller started to trip on an early un-named rehearsal-jam by yelling : " sliiide ! , sliiide ! " . Which lead to another hinted hit .

Mark Adams was nicked as "The Hansolor" and his basses had titles like "Monsterbass" and "Dancebass"


Steve Washington was known as "The Fearless Leader"
After leaving Slave , he formed the funkgroup AURRA , including Starleana Young and Curt Jones who had much input at the mighty Stone Jam-album from Slave . 2 other Slave-members who joined Aurra were Charles " Cedell " Carter and Tom Lockett . Steve did 2 other solo-albums ( Like A Shot ( 1984 ) and Civil Attack ( 1983 ) ) . After that he started to produce for artists like George Clinton ( Do Fries Go With That Shake / Hey Good Lookin' ) , Jimmy G. & The Tackheads , etc . I really love Slave , incredibly underated I think.

Mark Adams was the unsung hero to a degree , the big stars ; the two Steve`s , Arrington and Washington went onto bigger and better things chartwise ,the former with his "Hall of Fame and solo albums and the latter with Aurra ,Civil Attack (now there`s a funky album !) and then some work with George Clinton.

Mark Adams stayed faithful to Slave and its seemingly ever changing line up (well he was faithful up to the last album I bought "New Plateau") , his finest hour in my view was the "Showtime" where he was the main writer of the tracks "Party Lites" and "Wait For Me". Steve Washington had gone and taken a few band members with him and although Steve Arrington was still part of the band at this time , he too was soon gone , and although Mark had had a hand in all the big tunes the band had produced up to this point , this album showed he was still a songwriter of talent and quality and further improved the sound and legacy of Slave at a time when they could have disintegrated.

I know there is a greatest hits compilation out there , but this band in its many guises produced some immense tunes , it staggers me that with all the sampling and covering that goes on today why no-one has tapped into the "Slave" sound , the only tune that really captures it is "Keep The Faith" by De L Soul , which whenever I play it to my house loving mates produces raptures about the bass line.

Mr. Mark is The Man, but I'm also givin' props to Steve "Fearless Leader" Washington, when he put down the horn for a minute, and strapped on the Bass for the Slave off-shoot Aurra...Steve lays down some serious funk on tunes like "Are You Single" and "Make Up Your Mind", and "A Little Love"

I met Adams several times...he actually played out of my rig at a gig we were both playing...he's a cool cat...told me everything about his sound on all the recordings. Most people don't realize that he was only 16 when they recorded "Slide" and only 17 - 18 when they recorded "just freak", "Stone jam","just a touch" and everything else ...AMAZING
