Just a bit of chart triva....
This weeks #1 debut by Johnny Cash at about 89,000 copies is the LOWEST sales amount for a #1 debut. Breaking the mark set by Destiny's Child's " #1's " of 113,000.

The thing is, its still it shipping to record chain thing, its not over the counter sales. Its based on what stores order and reorder, which is why u see big debuts and then pretty big falls depending on the artist. Yes, I know that, but this isn't a big debut. That's the point.

The reason the numbers are so low are, one its a Johnny Cash record and why would a store order tons and tons of it when stores are geared to sell to teenagers. Two in the last year about 1000 stores have closed including 70% of the Musicland/Sam Goody chain, so you have to remember that is coming out of the orders. Everyone is getting there stuff Digital, Itunes and all that stuff, that is why the days of Music stores and Cds are about to be over, its sad. Sales data from point-of-sale cash registers is collected weekly from over 14,000 retail, mass merchant and non-traditional (on-line stores, venues, etc.) outlets. Weekly data is compiled and made available every Wednesday. Nielsen SoundScan is the sales source for the Billboard music charts.<<<< http://www.soundscan.com/about.html Still not accurate, i did the retail thing for 18 years, and the way it is done is by an order and then by a reorder and then from that an estimate is made, on a weekly basis, the reason it is this way is also because of "shrink" the word for "theft" in retail. If u have 500 copies of the new Beyonce on the shelves and someone steals them, do u think those sales are lost? no of course not, it has no affect because its just being tracked on a system called "RIM" retail inventory management, which is what submits numbers to soundscan not the registers. Im not saying the charts are a lie but they are about 50-60% accurate, they dont count alot of different outlets, they also dont track returns by stores to labels and customers to stores, that stuff is never tracked. Are you sure you aren't thinking of the RIAA which awards Gold and Platinum albums based on album shipments? I dont doubt your expertise in the field. But I have always known it as a point of sale systen , which is why Billboard switched to the system in 1991 , because it is more accurate. (not to say there is plenty of room for fraud, but thats another subject) Plus , I'm going with the Soundscan website in their desription of what they do http://www.soundscan.com/about.html also... http://ask.yahoo.com/20020215.html [Edited 7/13/06 11:08am]

No i understand what you are saying and it is more accurate than the RIAA system which is based purely on shipping, great point would be the Backstreet Boys "Black N Blue" cd which shipped about millions and millions to stores and chains, and then was certified 7 times platnum and they never minused the millions that got sent back by stores because they didnt sell. So soundscan is more accurate, because its a weekly inventory sort of, but alot of stores/chains get discounts for buying more, so the cd will debut higher, there was ALOT of this going on trust me.
