"golden age" is an overlooked album... a lot of critics didn't like it too much... they said it was either too dark or too rootsy... i enjoy it... "i hate my generation," "sweet thistle pie," "i'm a little rocket ship" and so many others... and my favorite "big dipper"... this was the cd that stayed in constant rotation during my depressing summer of 97... lol... and i got it autographed by david and johnny, so... but all in all, "golden age" may be my favorite... but most people go for "kerosene" and the self-titled... this new one is easily as good as either of those... also worth seeking out is the collaboration they did with leftover salmon called "oh cracker, where art thou?"... I must admit, I prefer Camper Van Beethoven to Cracker. But only SLIGHTLY. Either way, whatever incarnation David Lowrey tours with it's a show worth seeing. if you prefer CVB, then you definitely want to check out the new cracker cd... it's very much in the cracker tradition of being rootsy, but at the same time it's a lot more musically adventurous and quirky than cracker generally is... in parts it sounds like a cracker/CVB mashup... which makes sense, because victor krummenacher is playing in the current incarnation of cracker...
