Or - Here's a wild concept...Gee, could it be that SOME artists actaully STAND for something other than making money? eek

Dayspring seems to think that Jill is just speaking up in order to "jump start" her career and sell more records rolleyes as if this is the way to do that, lol.

Jill said it well. nod And maybe after the video ho's are done shaking their asses (whenever that day comes), we can vouch for more artists like her to be the superstars, not the Ciara's and Rihanna's of the world. I'm no huge fan of hers but at least her stuff isn't commercialized r'n'b tripe.

Jilly is a cutieeeee and has ALWAYS had a positive vibe.

Good for her!!

I remember going out to the clubs, you did everything NOT to look like a hoe in your spandex dress. lol Now its all about how hookerish you can look. When you have songs like "I'm in love with a stripper" blazing across the airwaves and MTV and BET having no damn sense at all, the kids are all about conforming. I was telling my kid that back in the 80's it was all about not looking like the next person and now the kids want to be whatever they see on a video.

Its really crazy. We have to teach self respect again.

Where are the rappers at? Where is Nelly ("Mr.Tip Drill"),50 Cent and all those other clowns who routinely degrade women in their videos? Why aren't they at this panel to defend their bullshit? It would be interesting to hear their viewpoint, lol.

did you ever hear about the panel Essence did with Remy Ma and some other female rappers. It was awful. Jean Grae was present as well but acted as if she couldn't say anything. Remy Ma just basically said that hoin' is ok, even though she didn't realize that's what she said.

No, I think the video ho came before this Black Hollywood trend. The films are now imitating the videos, which isn't surprising since video directors are doing feature films now and they draw upon what they did in the music video world.

The hell it did. Marilyn Manroe was a video hoe before there were music videos. Don't EVEN try to shift all the blame on brothas. Exploiting women's looks in movies gave birth to the video hoe trend and if you go back to the rock videos of the 80s, they were doing it back then before brothas were even on Mtv. Don't front. Go back and watch the "Cherry Pie" video. Video hoes galore. When its a WHITE GIRL, they're exempt from being video hoes, huh? Is that it?

There's a difference between exploiting those with power and those who have historically been marginalized. Black people in general are still not given the same respect as whites. People already assume a hypersexuality of black people in our society. To further exploit black women simply for profit is sickening. The enslaved shouldn't further enslave.

I agree, nonetheless there is a double standard. When whites do it, its "tongue-in-cheek". When we do it, its the worst thing ever.

Yeah, but in THIS case, the video hoes participation in Hip Hop are worse than the video hoes in Rock though, and also, they have more balance in other forms of their music - Pop for instance.

BULLSHIT. Its ALL titilation. Don't contribute to that double standard nonesense. It no different when the video hoes are doing splits on cars than shaking theeir asses on poles. Just because sistas tend to be working with a little more and can throw it a little better doesn't make it any different. IF a guy starts a fight with Mike Tyson and gets his ass whooped, he's still the fight starter.

Bro, if you can show me a Rock/Pop video that is comparable to what is shown in Nelly's "Tip Drill," you will win this argument. Deal?

Let's stop using the White man as a reason/excuse on issues WE can control. Video Hoing is one of those issues.

There used to be some instances of similar exploitation in the big hair rock videos of the 80s, but nothing to the extreme of recent "hip hop" (hip hop is dead, actually) videos.

sure. but Jill Scott talking about it isn't going to make one bit of difference. in this case, it might as well not have been commented on at all.

when someone that a) makes money on this type of video or b) makes some money at all stands up to talk about it, that's when it'll matter.

Scott Urges Better Portrayal for Women
By KRISTIE RIEKEN, Associated Press Writer
57 minutes ago

Actor Shemar Moore, rapper Common and former video dancer, Karrine Steffans, who wrote the book "Confessions of a Video Vixen," concerning her exploits, were part of the discussion.

The panel addressed the dangers these images present to young girls and said education and self-esteem will help keep them from believing this is a proper representation of black women.

"Ladies you are queens and you need to believe it," Moore said. "What do you want and what are you willing to do to get it?"

Steffans believes a lack of self-esteem allowed her to degrade herself in videos for virtually all the big names in hip hop.

"I was always told I was ugly," she said. "I didn't realize my own power and my own worth."

Scott told the audience that if they are offended by these images, they should stop buying the albums and encourage the people in their lives to do the same.

"This is about choosing what we will allow in our lives," she said. "We can force things. We can change things. Challenge the music industry with your purchasing power."

Scott used an eloquent speech, interlaced with song, to illustrate that black women are more than their sexuality and that music should represent that.

"There are many stories to be told that aren't about our sexuality," Scott said.

We're talking about the censorship of certain videos, unless "money talks" means boycotting BET subscriptions altogether (baby with the bathwater).

See, you're missing my point. There you go again with the "extent". Read the first sentence in my last post. Somebody killing one person is just as much of a murderer as somebody killing 10 people. Is one worse? Yes. Should they both be stopped? Yes. Exploitation has always been here. It always will be. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, my friend.
Oh and the "white man" is only being used as an example in the instance of double standards - not as an excuse. Recognize.
