Dont bother requesting at Radio

Though i have never emailed or called a station to request something, i know alot of artists put lists of emails for radio stations to request at. Just found out something interesting, Radio does not take requests, if they are owned by clear channel, which almost all of them are, they are NOT allowed to play anything not already prelisted, even if you bombard them with emails. So basically Dj's at these stations are useless, wow, remember the day when a Dj just felt like playing an album cut and he could do it, not today.

I think the last time album cuts were played it was back in the 80's. Once MTV took over and was bought out, late 80's or so, thats when it all became one.

630 Ched was top 40.

The last time i listened to radio would have to be the summer of 1983, u could hear everything from, The Police to the Eurythmics, to Lionel, to Kool and the Gang, from prince to Michael to Pat Benatar to Rick James and the Mary Jane girls to Jovi to Duran and u2 and Inxs all on the same station, to me that was the last time radio really even mattered at least to me, i dont even know what stations exist anymore in my own city (Ny), nor do i care.

Yeah, well those were all pop artists of the day.

And you can hear the exact same lineup on "Jack FM" formats today.

But the genres stretched much more than today, a typical playlist for a station (which actually used to be posted in Billboard) would include about 100 songs, and also leave the option to take requests, todays format is limited to 20 songs if even that many, no requests. There were tons of album tracks getting played in the very early 80's, lets just take "all night long" by the Mary Jane Girls this track was an album cut, that got more airplay then the single, nowadays you would not be able to play it because its not on the playlist. Prince "17 days" at one point almost entered the charts on its airplay, that could never happen today,B sides dont happen anymore.

Though the artists i have listed may have been the "popular thing" at the time, u will never hear that diversity today, not counting oldie stations (which also have playlists, thats why u always hear "Stairway to Heaven" as the only Zep song) But today with that range of artists, Prince and Lionel and Kool would have to be played on RB stations, U2 and Jovi and the Police would be Rock, and most of the others would fall into top40 or just wouldnt get played. It should also be noted that the airtime for these artists wasnt bought and paid for like today either.

That was the good ole days. I remember stations playing cuts from an album that was an upcoming release. Donnie Simpson was notorious for playing cuts from a prince or janet album a week before being released. I did hear that he played cuts from 3121..in fact he played the entire CD before its release.

Thats good to hear, there are some djs that still do it, but odds are that the station is not owned by clear channel, because anything they own is paid for, got these facts out of "Before the Music Dies"

Ched was the only top 40 radio station back in the day competing with CFRN nod and Chuck Chandler was the celebrity DJ as well as Doug Christie. No longer what it used to be.... K-97FM (eventually changed to K-rock) came along and killed Ched. Ched eventually changed it's format and is currently doing sports talk shows etc., no more top 40 music.

These days it's The Bounce 91.7 FM (rap, R&B, etc.) or 92.5 Joe FM (80s, 90s, anything - they take requests) who are competing. Too bad 96X changed it's format to country sigh, bad choice - I dropped this station and now I listen to 92.5 Joe FM.

yup, 90% of Radio sucks.

Thankfully we have 89.3, The Current in MPLS. This is a public radio station. It's heavily skewed in the 'alternative' direction, but play music from just about every genre. And, they take requests, play album tracks, bsides, imports, etc. One of the DJs has been and is still heavily supporting 3121. It's truly refreshiing radio.

Long ago and far away grasshopper, radio was inhabited by DJs that not only would take requests and had eclectic playlists, they also had the ability to intelligently discuss in detail what they were playing.

An example would be...

...the great William "Rosko" Mercer tombstone
(WOR-FM & WNEW-FM 1966-1970)

Rosko also emceed many of the fabulous shows at The Fillmore East.

West coast, East coast, the Midwest and across the pond. wink

I used to go to bed with a transistor radio under pillow listening to his show along with other "free form" FM DJs (who would also play full album sides) like Murray the K and Allison "The Nightbird" Steele.

They aren't taking requests these days because the majority of the stations are automated. The DJs record their voices into the computer ahead of time and they aren't even there when their show airs. In my area, one of the local DJs also does sports on the local television news. I've seen times when he is on TV talking about sports and on the radio playing music at the same exact time. He must be Superman. lol

I never liked it when DJs took requests back in the day anyway because 9 times out of 10, it was some woman calling in some "beautiful song that means something to her" but bored the hell out of everyone else.
Andy is a four letter word.
