The Cover Girls debut CD the first/only indie release to chart 5 Hot 100 singles

I remember this fact being in Billboard back when that magazine meant something. The Cover Girls (the freestlye queens) were the first and only Indie (i mean indie!) label release to chart 5 Hot 100 singles.

Show Me
Promise Me
Spring Love
Because Of You
Inside Outside

The album itself was put out by Fever Records, which still exists to this day, this label is straight indie, no major distribution.
Id like to see an artist today chart 5 singles with no major push.

Although they had no major label they did alot of promotion.

I used to tape all their tv appearances
back then, quite alot.

I still have that lp on vinyl.

It still is very impressive because they had no money backing them at all, their managers got them booked on shows as did their fans, mostly here in Nyc. They shot 3 videos for 5 of those singles and the budget for all of them added up to about 10,000 added together. They shot Spring Love, on a cam at Coney Island, they shot "Because of You" in a club after one of their shows, it was all one shot, and their first Video "Show me" was also shot very inexpensive, basically as the girls "dressed" and tried different outfits. They couldnt shoot videos for singles "Inside Outside" and "Promise Me" due to lack of $$. Later on their second and third albums they were picked up by epic and then started getting a little more national exposure, but i think what they accomplished with that first record, and charting 5 singles, and keeping that album on the charts for nearly a year, most an amazing accomplishment.

Nope, as far as i know they never got Mtv play, Video Music Box always played them as did Hot Tracks. NYC is their home and basically got them played.

I remember The Cover Girls' biggest promotional push at THAT point was a live concert on The Disney Channel (Anyone remember that?!?).

What i also remember was the Cover Girls having one of the biggest Dance hits with "Funk Boutique" which features almost no verses. But the song was so big, they got booked on Tv shows to do it, and in those days almost every tv show was lipsynching, but there was almost nothing to lipsynch. Also the fact that they were unable to get the money to do a video for it, so Fever cut together some concert footage they did.

Oh how could i forget "Dont Stop Now" which was the single the Cover Girls had out before the "Wishing on a Star" album, the B side was FUNK BOUTIQUE, what happend was Dont Stop Now, was big in the clubs, but suddenly Djs flipped the record and Radio did the same, which furthers my point that DJS were free back in those days, but once the 90's and Mtv took over that was it, no more freedom.
So off of that they ended up with a Double A side Number one Dance hit!

The Cover Girls were a New York City-based Latin freestyle pop trio, the brainchild of music promoter Sal Abbatiello. In 1987 the trio consisted of Louise Sabater (also known as Angel Clivillés), Caroline Jackson and Sunshine Wright. They were the one of the first acts to bring freestyle music to the pop charts, having a string of minor hits in the late eighties. Their debut album Show Me produced five Hot 100 chart entries: "Show Me" (#44), "Spring Love" (#98), "Because Of You" (#27), "Promise Me" (#40) and "Inside Outside" (#55). The album and its singles are considered early classics of this musical genre.

In 1989 Wright was replaced by Margo Urban and more hits followed. "My Heart Skips a Beat" climbed to #38 and the ballad "We Can't Go Wrong" became their first Top 10 hit, peaking at #8.

By 1992 the trio had more lineup chages: Jackson was the only remaining original member. New members were Evelyn Escalera and Michelle Valentine. A second Top 10 hit followed ("Wishing On A Star" #9) and their final chart entry, which was "Thank You" (#75).

Sabater has had solo success on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart as Angel Clivillés.

Evelyn is now fronting the group with two new members touring clubs in NYC and Florida mostly. Look for some new music very soon.

Former lead singer Angel still makes solo appearances. I saw her perform a few years back at Queens Gay Pride.
