vainandy said: "Something About You" by Ebonee Webb in 1981. That jam sounds a lot like "Head". Everything about that song just screams "Prince!". The falsetto, the synths, everything. Hell, the first time I heard it, I thought it was Prince. They have another jam from 1983 called "Too Hot To Be Cool" that sounds just like Prince also.
Ebonee Webb was a band that worked with the barkays in the early 80's. I know the barkays keyboardist winston stewart and a few other members played and wrote songs with ebonee webb on their albums. Don't laugh at my funk

No disrespect people while prince is extremely talented and he helped
revolutionize music in the 80's, do not make it seem like other artists were only influenced by prince. Some of these other artists influenced prince as well. Let's start with james brown, elvis presley, little richard, jimi hendrix just for starters. Hamilton Bohannon was wearing the perm and doing prince like stuff before prince even hit the scene.Sly and the family stone was doing rock-funk anthems long before prince. The barkays were doing wilding out on stage long before prince hit the scene. Hey i love prince's music but let's not get it twisted by saying who sounds like prince. A lot of these artists before him influenced prince as well. Don't laugh at my funk

Hey i love prince's music but let's not get it twisted by saying who sounds like prince. A lot of these artists before him influenced prince as well. True on all counts. But almost none of those artist has became that Prince is today: A Genre In Itself! Even Jam/Lewis admitted that the MPLS sound IS the Prince sound. The basics of the Prince sound: 2 guitars 1 bass (guitar or keyboard synth) 1 electric drum kit and/or durm machine (LinnDrum/Roland TR series/Akai MPC series) 2 or more keyboard synths (to play all of horns, strings, organs, pianos, electric pianos, and various keyboard-related parts!) EDIT: James Brown does count as a genre because of breakbeats! [Edited 7/1/06 15:24pm]

I think about songs like:
"Wanna Love You Girl" by Robin Thicke feat. Pharrell (that's PURPLE) "I Wanna Be Loved" by Eric Benet "Dust" by Van Hunt "Untitled" by D'Angelo (that's PURPLE) "Frontin'" by Pharrell feat. Jay-Z (I can see Prince doing that cut)

Hey i love prince's music but let's not get it twisted by saying who sounds like prince. A lot of these artists before him influenced prince as well. All of what you say is true. But for many of us, these are stipulated before we even answer the question of the thread. Prince reached the pinnacle of that history you so eloquently described, because of talent and circumstance (imagine the megastardom Hendrix or Sly could have achieved in the era of the music video). So many artists are compared to him simply because he personifies -- but does not have a patent on -- the sound. Whether it's called the Prince sound, funk, soul, R&B, whatever name you want to give it. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
