The CURTOM-Records and Curtiy Mayfield thread I think its time for a thread dedicated to the real chicago soul. Curtis Mayfield's Curtom records (first distributed through Buddah, then Warner) set the groove and its time that not only the man himself but his projects get the respect which they deserve. I particulary favor Leroy Hutson ("Lucky Fellow" is just such a groundbreaker) and the Impressions. a real groove is baby huey's only record relased post-mortum. I think that he would have been a real big hit if the drugs didnt take him out before his time...
this is a small list of my favorite curtom releases: 1968: The Impressions - This Is My Country 1969: The Impressions - The Young Mods Forgotten Story 1970: Curtis Mayfield - Curtis The Impressions - Check Out Your Mind Baby Huey & The Babysitters - The Baby Huey Story - The Living Legend 1971: Curtis Mayfield - Curtis/Live! Curtis Mayfield - Roots 1972: The Impressions - Times Have Changed Curtis Mayfield - Superfly 1973: Curtis Mayfield - Back To The World The Impressions - Preacher Man Leroy Hutson - Love Oh Love The Impressions - Finaly Got Myself Together Leroy Hutson - The Man! 1974: Curtis Mayfield - Sweet Exorcist The Impressions - Three The Hard Way Bobby Whiteside - Bittersweet Stories Curtis Mayfield - Got To Find A Way 1975: Curtis Mayfield - (There's No Place Like) Amerika Today The Impressions - First Impressions Natural Four - Heaven Right Here On Earth 1976: Leroy Hutson - Feel The Spirit Leroy Hutson - Hutson II "Peace and Benz -- The future, made in Germany"

A leader and innovator in music performance, production, ownership and distribution with his various associations and via his CURTOM label. Surely, a major influence on Prince from vocals to guitar to song lyrics. Though, if Prince really took a clue he'd have come out with a much stronger pro-Black stance.
"We people, who are darker than blue.." Curtis '71 I love the CURTOM label debut CURTIS, ROOTS and SWEET EXORCIST, the most, but an underground fave is CURTIS LIVE with "Stone Junkie. Stone. Stone Junkie". Edit: Of course SUPERFLY. I got too eager!! "I'm you mama, I'm your daddy I'm that nigga in the alley" [This message was edited Tue Jul 30 10:51:44 PDT 2002 by PFunkjazz] test

I think Curtis Mayfield is amazing and any guitarist or songwriter has a lot of learning 2 do from his stuff. Too bad he is no longer with us.

Baby Huey's version of "a change is gonna come" drives me to tears man...
"takin care of business at the drive in movies" "and then you see the guys with them funny looking cigarettes" "you take a hit and the world seems to brighten up a little bit...bit...bit..." "there's three kind of people. there's black people, white people and then there's my people..." "Peace and Benz -- The future, made in Germany"

"Curtis" is arguably greatest debut of all time. Of course "Roots", "Live" and "Superfly" are classics too but IMO "There's No Place Like America Today" is the one that's heavily slept on...

Thanks so much for this thread!!!
My father and uncle did some remodeling work in his house back in the 70's. He stayed right next door to my Uncle here in the ATL. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to meet him. However, I hung out at his crib a few times. Also have been in his home recording studio (while his engineers were working on some tracks). He spent a lot of his time between his Atlanta home and his home in Chicago (where he's from). It seemed like the few times I visited him, he was either in Chicago or out on the road(touring). He had a nice home in Atlanta too. I remember going into his home for the first time and seeing those gold records on his wall in the living room. I remember seeing the gold record for his Sparkle album, which was the soundtrack from the movie Sparkle. From what people say about him, he was a nice humble man, who had a radiant personality and spirit. I can believe this because his relatives(the ones I met were very nice and down to earth) I'm hesistant about telling stuff like this, but I thought I'd share it, because I have so much respect for this man's artistry and music. As a poet/writer, he's a superior inspiration for me...that's for sure!!! Wish I could have actually met him and told him what his music and lyrical dexterity meant to me. We need more writers like him now in the music industry... "We're all build up with progress, but sometimes I must confess, we can deal with rockets and dreams, but reality what does it means...ain't nothing said,,,cause Freddie's Dead"!!! I hear you brother loud and clear...Miss you...R.I.P.

Jimi was one of those who learned a bit from Curtis. From the title track of Electric Ladyland (tell me that vocal arrangement doesn't sound like something straight from the Mayfield cannon) to that wah wah guitar, Curtis was a bigger influence than many people give him credit for. I don't know that I've ever heard a wah wah more sweet than how Curtis used it, and subsequently Jimi's use of it. That live album he (Mayfield) recorded is sublime. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Yeah and the Impression-esque soul inspired "Sweet Angel" and the more "R&B" side of Hendrix's material. Curtis & The Impressions were also a massive influence on the sound of Bob Marley & The Wailers.

AHHH MAN!!! Leroy Hutson. Man I remember his hit song called "Lover's Holiday"(not EWF's version) on Curtom Records. When I think about his song, my mind also goes back to that small forgotten hit back in the early 70's by Motown writer Lamont Dozier called "Trying To Hold On To My Woman", this was on ABC Records. Anybody remember that one???
