I know. Problem is, the media expects rappers to keep rapping about MoneyCashHoes.

When india keeps singing about the intracies of her life, and rejecting conventional attitudes of beauty and success, her supporters (at least in the media) she's seen as self-indulgent, self-centered, self-righteous, etc.

Wonder why that is.

I almost asked why people are labelling her as such on this thread just because of the title of the album. People can really jump to conclusions, can't they? I mean the woman is strong & proud & wonderful - somehow that gets translated into something negative confused

Read no further than some of the early reviews of her album.

I don't care for her music, but I want her album to do well. Black musicians atop the music charts is always a good thing to see.

Good point.

And when they don't, you get threads from folks asking "Where's Q-Tip?" confuse

Well, like I said earlier, most of the music-buying public isn't deep or into social or political issues so they tend to deem anything like that as "boring" or "meaningless." Again, it's hard out there for a pimp but apparently it's not hard to be black and proud, so the pimps get the noteriety. Sad.

I'm guessing it's harder out there for a ho. Maybe that explains Britney's notoriety.

Alicia's last album debuted at #1 with 195,000 copies sold.

that was a live LP, cmon don't throw bullshit, Alica Keys last studio LP is Diary which sold over 600,000, cmon stop the bullshit

That's the whole point. Live albums do not do as well the one's that are recorded in a studio. For her to pull in that much is a good thing.

Oh wow, you're even one of THOSE 15 year olds - "The light skinned women are prettier than the dark skinned ones." Sad. I sure hope you mature past that, but at your age, I can see why you're brainwashed into thinking that.

You know how some of these people are brainwashed into thinking the more European features you have the prettier you are. This youngin is a prime example.

I wonder if Prince wouldn't have more fans if he didn't look like he did, or at least dress & make himself up like he does. A lot of people I knew when I was young felt he was incredibly gross looking.

Prince is so talented he couldn't help but be a star, but his looks aren't exactly mainstream.

I give it up to lil for starting this thread and to mostly everyone else for piping in with some honesty. Honesty isn't something I see a lot on here, so that's refreshing. Although everyone for the most part is coming from the same place, mainly cuz the shit is so obvious. But, things are changing in the media. This is because of the fact that they know folks will sooner or later tear down the very ones they put up on a platform. Alicia will see a backlash from young girls for thinking she was beautiful in the first place and they will try to make her pay for it by not buying her next joint. While India will rise to the spotlight, where she should have been along. Things go in circles anyway. Alicia will always be o.k. in this country. Acting roles, and all the other routes new breed entertainers take today will smile lovingly on Alicia.

I am just dumbfounded as to why anyone would want every woman to look like one particular person...in this case, Halle Berry. confused As if there can be no diversity in looks at all. How goddamn boring. zzz

From my perspective, the answer to the question of this thread is no. She'd probably be about as popular as she is right now. And for the same reasons that Susan Cagle and Corinne Bailey Rae likely won't be as popular as Alicia Keys is, despite being as 'light-skinded'. Alicia Keys has had one of the most successful and well-established hit-makers guiding her career from jump. Last I checked, none of the other three women do. This is, ultimately, less about skin color as it is about marketing.

But in a sense the answer is yes because here's the the thing...Would Clive even take on an artist that most would consider unattractive? Think about it, Angie Stone was/is with Clive...where is her career? And she's arguably more talented than Alicia.

In other words, Clive saw the "pretty light skinned girl" that could play the piano and he saw "marketing ability."

Well you just answered your own question. You said "Would Clive even take on an artist that most would consider unattractive?" Then you offered Angie Stone as an example of an 'unattractive' artist that he did take on.

But ultimately, what are we talking about here in terms of popularity? India.Arie, I believe, has the #1 album in the country?? Could she have sold a few more copies of her album if she ditched the acoustic guitar on the cover and changed the title to something a bit more 'fabulous'? Threw in a couple of Kanye or Pharrell re-mixes? Maybe. But that would be untrue to the type of artist she is and the image she's pushing.
