some other memories....

***I recall the late-night concerts that MTV used to air at night.Specifically,I remember watching an entire Cheap Trick performance in 1982.

***I remember,in the summer of 1983,being shocked at seeing Donna Summer's "She Works Hard For The Money" video. At that point, they were mainly showing only rock videos and definitely not anybody connected to the disco era, lol.Looking back,I think 1983 was their "transitional year".That's when they began to show more pop/dance videos, and not just FM rock.

***speaking of their playlists.....the one thing that used to annoy me about their early years is their refusal to show certain videos.I remember they rejected The System's "You Are In My System" video but they showed the cover version by Robert Palmer! Likewise, there were many other R&B artists who were making New Wave-sounding songs that would have fit perfectly on MTV (Prince's "Controversy"...Cameo's "Alligator Woman"....Vanity 6's "He's So Dull"....even Rick James' "SuperFreak").

I saw MTV from day one!!

smile

I actually think MTV ruined Music, BUT NOW that MTV is 99% Reality TV.. that we will have a whole generation that wont know MTV was "Music TV" not Reality Tv..

So music will move away from the stupid Dance-Lip Sync- Pop Music!!

So I think we will go full circle in about 5-10 years from now smile

As for the original MTV VJ's we can hear them on Sirius Radio everyday!!!!!

cool

Speaking of Martha Quinn, she stills hold the all-record for longest active MTV VJ ever. She work along with both the first & second generation.

As for the MTV news anchors, Kurt Loder still hold that record.

I was just on YouTube watching Huey Lewis and The News' "Do You Believe In Love" video (from 1982) and suddenly I got all nostalgic for the early days of MTV.Hard to believe, but there was actually a time when MTV was all about music. They showed music videos 24 hours a day...there was no 'Real World',no stupid reality shows, just music, music and more music.I got hooked on MTV in the spring of '82,only a few months after it first appeared. It was so exciting back then! Who remembers those days? What are your memories?...

YES I remember when MTV actually showed videos! And little else, except the weekly concert. biggrin And I remember all those first-generation VJ's. However, until I left home (in early '85!), I could only watch it at a friend's or my older brother's house since my parents were still too cheap to get cable TV! razz lol

Without cable, you had to settle for "Friday Night Videos"...which network was that on, I forget?

Nina Blackwood turned up as a DJ on a Denver station, about 4-5 years ago (I moved away from there in March '02).

Notably,"Video Killed The Radio Star" was the first video that was shown when MTV premiered in August 1981.

I used to go crazy when Prince's "1999" video would come on.I think this was the very first Prince video that they showed.

Yes!!! I have to say though, "I Ran" and "Our House" were way overplayed. barf

Here are some more!

"Centerfold" J. Geils Band
"Don't You Want Me" Human League
"Tainted Love" Soft Cell
"Jack and Diane" John Cougar Mellencamp
"Crimson and Clover" Joan Jett
"White Wedding" Billy Idol
"Waiting on a Friend" Rolling Stones

Remember?!
I read that MTV actually launched in 1981. A few years ago Martha Quinn appeared as a DJ on a new local radio station that played 80's music. STAR 90...or something. It was a fantastic station and then quickly got co-opted and started mixing in 90's music and sort went downhill.
