Wasn't Kari before any of those guys? The Bill Bellamy, Daisy Fuentes days (and especially that freak show Jesse Camp) is when I started losing interest in MTV.

Kari was the first of THAT generation.

Another one that slip my mind: China Kantner

China Kantner. Haven't thought about her in a while. That was around the time I first started watching MTV. It wasn't accessible to me when it first came about. All my music videos at that point in time came from Video Jukebox on HBO and Night Tracks on TBS.

No! lol Martha's cute (she was also Peter's wife on the failed Brady Bunch series in the early 90s) but Kennedy? Maybe she was cute, but she just grated on me.

MTV really started to lose it's edge because of too many reality shows: Road Rules, The Real World, Laguna Beach, etc.

Martha Quinn seemed as if she had a major crush on Prince. She always showed him alot of love.I recall,in the 90s,she was gushing over the 'Diamonds And Pearls' holographic cover, she said it was great.Perhaps Prince is paying tribute to her in the song "Insatiable"?

I got a jones,Martha...oh yeah,it be like this
I can't have a hug unless I have a kiss

Exactly! Reality shows killed MTV.Suddenly, the music became secondary.

Yeah, I remember it vividly! lol I especially remember Rhonda Shear putting extra squeaky emphasis on the "up" every time she's say the name of the show. "Welcome to USA Up All Night!"

I was gonna insert a picture of her here but I'm at work and a Google search for her yields mostly nude pics. lol

I remember the early days of MTV. We had cable but it must have been a pay channel in my area because we could hear the sound but there was a scrambled picture. I saw all my videos on "Friday Night Videos" and "Night Tracks".

We got rid of cable in 1985 and didn't get it again until 1991. By that time, MTV's "scrambled picture" had cleared up but it wasn't worth watching. lol

God, I remember the days MTV, VH-1, and Nickelodeon all went on the air.

Early 80's MTV was a blast, but I really enjoyed it in the late 80's as well because by then, they had started to branch out and play different genres of music, not just all rock. They also added a few non-music shows like Remote Control and Just Say Julie, for a little variety.

I think they tried to branch out into too many different directions in the early 90's that you almost didn't know what the network was about anymore. One minute they were running cartoons, the next minute they were doing reality shows, then there were some music videos, gameshows, news, politics, live performances, etc...

I don't know who keeps tuning in to all the goofy programming they have on MTV nowdays, but aparently MTV is doing well and they don't seem to have any intention of going back to playing actual music videos anymore.

I love me some VH-1 Classic though, and to a lesser degree MTV2. Vh-1 classic is almost exactly how MTV used to be back in the day, in fact they even play all the cool videos from that time as well.

I actually don't know life without MTV cause it started when I was 2. I could only watch it at my Great-Grandparents house cause it was only in Manhattan for the first few years. I remember watching it back in 83-84 with all the Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna and Prince videos. I liked the original crew the most but the 2nd generation was just as cool once I got used to them.

Tom mentioned shows like Remote Control and Just Say Julie, whiched I liked, but what was cool about them was that even with their shows, videos was always a part of the show. Remote Control asked questions about George Michael or Run-DMC and then at the end they had to name the artists in that TV pyramid and they'd win the big prize. That was fun and that's what's missing with MTV today. It's too busy being a youth pop culture station instead of being a part of pop culture like it used to be. Such as sad shame for a station that marks its 25 Anniversary in August. MTV should be so much better than it is. disbelief
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
