ALL-TIME MOST BAD-ASS FUNK JAMS Here is a challenge for the Org ...
Post a single jam you believe is one of the all-time greatest funk cuts, but only ONE per post. Feel free to provide details why you think so much of the track and then clear the way for the next person to post. But do not post any repeats of tunes someone else has already chosen (although you may post affirmations of others' picks if you especially like their choice or want to add something about that particular song). Approach it as if someone had a gun to your head and you had to name the hottest funk jam that had not yet been mentioned, what would it be? Let's see how long we can make this trail of supreme funkiness! When it is all said and done, we can look back and see which artists received the most mentions. I will start it off: MORE BOUNCE TO THE OUNCE - Zapp This slab of techno-funk was the beginning of the end for George Clinton's funk empire as it was supposed to come out on his fledgling Uncle Jam Records, but then Roger Troutman (RIP) turned it over to Warner Bros. Records and it become one of the biggest funk smashes of all time. But it would have never happened without the help of Roger's childhood Bootsy, who reached back to his Dayton, Ohio, brothers and co-produced their debut album in 1980. This is a mammoth, pulsating groove that I never get tired of. It has been sampled by legions of rappers and sounds as fresh today as it did more than 25 years ago. Peace, Scott If you've got funk, you've got style.

Great topic Scott. I could talk about old schoolfunk all day.
The Zapp track is a very apt milestone of a tune to start it off. It's very hard to choose just one track but I'm gonna go with the following track. When I first heard it I had goosebumps on top of goosebumps. So funky, it's just ridiculous!! The Meters - Africa The Funk, the whole funk & nothin' but the funk, ya dig?!

Sly and The Family Stone - Dance To The Music(Medley), it is the best 10 minutes of music ever laid down by anyone ever! Though i guess it could be seen as pre-funk as opposed to bad-ass funk. Otherwise i'd go for Fopp by Ohio Players, its so darn nasty.

It is hard to choose only one , but I'm going with: Holy Ghost - the Bar Kays [full version] - IMO, one of the funkiest grooves ever, especially with that floorshaking drum break (pre- go-go, by the way)... ... " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

I'll go with Spank-A-Lee from...
![]() ...Thrust because of stellar musicians and musicianship involved. Some may argue that this is more of a Jazz piece. But if you can't feel the FUNK in this tune there's not much I can say. tA ![]() http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Man, you all have named several of my favorites already.
I will add Parliament's "Flashlight" There have only been maybe a few dozen times in my life when I have heard a cut (usually something very funky) that amazes me for its sheer grooveness and truly gives me an eargasm and funkifies my soul. "Flashlight" is one of those tracks. It was one of those masterpieces that I just had to hear over and over again because it literally made me buzz with excitement Of course, this was in 1977 when it first came out and it was truly like nothing that had ever preceded it. P-Funk and Prince were among the handful of artists that, in their primes, accomplished this feat with at least one cut on album after album, and that is why I dig them so much. Peace, Scott If you've got funk, you've got style.

Interesting that no one has selected a Prince tune yet, so let me be the first ...
HOUSEQUAKE From the first pulses of that double drum beat this track had me hooked and unable to resist moving my body (not that I would want to). Prince had managed to incorporate some hip-hop qualities into his James Brown/P-Funk-influenced thang and came up with a radical departure from anything he or anyone else had ever done. This cut blew the minds of all my friends at the time as well. Everyone was like, "How the hell did he come up with this shit?!" Simple, because he is a genius. And who could forget his performance of Housequake in the Sign O the Times movie? It still cracks me up watching him do that backwards crawl, flip-over and splits. Peace, Scott If you've got funk, you've got style.

Great Choices one and all but after I've gone through my limited collection of 1011 funk songs in itunes, I've come to a conclusion.
Sex Machine James Brown is funk and this song, while more mainstream, is the one I never get tired of. It's also one that I can talk to the average listener (nobody here) when I'm trying to explain funk and they've actually heard it.
