Roger was the best on talkbox. Anybody can rock a vocoder. They're two different fx/instruments.

Roger Troutman. Although Midnight Star came out with some very good music. When it comes to the vocoder, No one made it work better then Roger. Man, I miss him. R.I.P.

Hard choice because both groups are funky as hell. Roger and Zapp's music is a little more funky but I still love the "outer space" sound of Midnight Star. Very hard choice.....Roger and Zapp....no, Midnight Star....hell, I don't know. lol I guess Roger and Zapp.

Roger made the talkbox what it is. Peter Frampton and Jon Bon Jovi even used it but no one could touch Roger on it. Vocoder users like Midnight Star were in a different category. They are not the same instruments, as has been said.

What did Newcleus use? Was that an instrument of just a voice speeded up?

Back in the days before digital audio, Newcleus, Prince and Jesse Johnson used to slow down the recording and sing the parts at a slower tempo in their regular pitch, then speed the recording back up to normal speed to get that effect. Then pitch shifters came out and people would use them but they would get a "metallic" sound to their voice. Evantide made a processor for the voice that eliminated the metallic sound and made pitch shifting more natural and artists like Janet and Britney have never had to sing another harmony again if they so chose not to.
Did I tell too much? lol

Thanks. I had a feeling the voice was speeded up but I couldn't understand how they kept it in tempo with the music. Very creative people.

Roger made a CAREER out of the "talkbox". Vincent Calloway of Midnight Star used it sporadically compared to Roger. And, yes Peter Frampton as well as Johnny "Guitar" watson used it. BUT, there's ONE defining moment in talkbox history. There's a video from 72 of a NY TV show called SOUL. Stevie Wonder was the guest. And, during the end of his set, he took a "talkbox solo". As much as I LOVE Roger, my friend said it best: THAT MOMENT MADE ROGER'S WHOLE CAREER.....HE JUST DIDN'T KNOW IT YET!!!!!
Roger Troutman F.I.P. (Funk In Peace)!!!!!

Since yall are right, and a talkbox and a vocoder are two different things, I'll just give one million props and a big REST IN PEACE to my man Roger. If they were the same thing it'd still be Roger, all damn day.
