Women of Color who play guitar Hello my musical gods and goddesses.
So my 9-year-old daughter is a rock star. So far only in her head, but she's been begging for guitar lessons for a year. She draws guitars, writes songs, and she and her two best friends have already come up with a band name ("Triple Threat" - my daughter on lead guitar, Mykala on bass guitar and Lynzie on drums ). We were watching Mary J. Blige do a GMA concert this morning (with an all-male backing band), and the wise old daughter of mine commented that there are plenty of singers that look like her, but she never sees women of color playing the guitar. I'm already planning on getting her some CDs and pictures of India.Arie and Me'Shell, but do you darlings have any other suggestions? I want my baby to feel supported and like there are women who have done this before her. I haven't got the funds for a guitar or lessons yet, but I'm getting there. Any suggestions on supporting her in learning music are welcome too. [Edited 6/23/06 10:11am] The Normal Whores Club

Abeena had an album out 1.5 years go called Tuesday’s Child. She plays piano also. R&B or I guess sorta neo-soulish.
http://abenaa.com/abenaa.html Latrice (Barnett) has an album out called Illuminate. She plays guitar and a few other instruments. Best known as a house vocalist but her album is sorta R&B, chillout vibe. http://www.latricebarnett.com/ India’s going on tour this summer. Maybe you can take your daughter to see her. Maybe you can get her a used acoustic and if she has a great ear she can teach herself until she gets lessons. Very cute, btw. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Does Norah Jones play the guitar? I think I recall seeing pictures of her playing the guitar in a band a few weeks ago.

Get her those lessons. You never know what could happen.

I hate the fact that this is my initial suggestion.
But until I think of something else... ...A Taste of Honey - Hazel Payne tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Very cool that your daughter is an aspiring musician! I have a 9 year old who writes very deep poetry. I love it. You should check out this new artist named Corrine Bailey Rae. I may have totally wrecked the spelling of her name, but She writes her own music and playes accoustic guitar. If I had to descibe her sound it would be "breezy". Kinda mellow and innocent(but not corny). If you're looking for a sistah with an edge, try Skunk Annansie. Incredible band led by Skin. They may be a bit heavy for a 9 year old, but they're very very good. A happy face, A Thumpin Bass, For A Lovin' Race. PEACE.

If you're near any pawn shops, you can get a decent acoustic guitar for cheap. I've always heard you should start out learning on an acoustic, then move up to electric. That could be a bunch of crap, though.
As for lessons, "Guitar for Dummies" is a GREAT guide until you can afford lessons. It's twenty bucks, it has a CD of how the chords should sound, and if she really wants to learn, the fundamentals are right there. She could take more advanced lessons if she teaches herself the basics. Just some thoughts.

[Edited 6/23/06 10:15am] Thanks...she's awesome. That picture is from last Halloween; she was dressed as (of course) a rock star. I'll let everyone else do the recommending, but... ...adorable! So cute. The Halloween explains the picture. I was like, "Why is she rockin' the eyelashes?" I'm always hoping for a mainstream comeback for lashes and wigs, so I was just ready to accept it.

My 4 year daughter has shown a little interest in playing the guitar...she likes to strap up with her play guitar and use a penny as the guitar pick. I can't afford lessons right, so your suggestion just might work until I can afford them.

i have a copy of "guitar for dummies". it's good stuff. hopefully your daughters aren't to the stage of divadom yet that the title offends them.
the great thing about the book is the CD that comes with it - they can actually HEAR if they're playing correctly.

Her younger sister is into wigs: pink, green, blue, the crazier the better. The Normal Whores Club

At any rate, keep us up on her progress!
