Taylor Hicks has the #1 single in the country

The American Idol debuts @ #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. What's up with that?

That almost always happens. Singles rarely sell here, so the anticipation of the winner's single makes it debut at #1 based primarily on sales alone. Kelly's single debuted at #1, Clay and Ruben debuted at #1 and #2, and Fantasia also debuted at #1. I haven't really watched since because I got fed up (although I had to watch Stevie night this year), but I think Carrie and Bo were also #1.

I can't wait for him to disappear. I just saw that Ford Ad and I wanted to projectile vomit on the TV. It's kind of irrational how much I detest him.

What's up with that is the fact that AI has the only garunteed sell through single that will sell (hell, no of days, they are probably the only one that bothers releasing them at all)! It sold a pretty healthy amount of copies....like over 100K. It's digital singles sales were only OK (with Shakira and Nelly Furtado probably outsellling him by a lot). I always figured AI and it's singles sales could have meant the return of the sell through single in America but the fact that digital singles count for so much is cool too. I think the reason it sells well is because the people that watch AI are much more likely to buy a single in the stores (no matter what the mark up) then go online and download it.

are you surprised by this? more people voted in AI's finale than in the presidential election.

Actually, if I am correct, since 1995, which is when Billboard changed its Hot 100 chart to reflect Soundscan figures, there have been 14 songs which debuted at number one. (Prior to that, the highest debut single was at number 6.) Mariah Carey accounts for four of those singles, and American Idol contestants account for five of them. That means that only five other artists have debuted at number one since 1995.

BTW, Ruben Studdard debuted at number 2, but Clay Aiken did debut at number one. All of the other AI winners debuted at number one. Bo Bice debuted at number 2 last year.

Right. And a 6 year old can vote on AI. Hell, most of them did.

Lets also not forget that this single is everywhere, I walked into tower looking for the new joan jett and Billy joel, and everywhere i looked was this damn taylor hicks single EVERYWHERE. Lets also not forget that this guy is everywhere, not just AI but the Leno show, Letterman, Kimmel, commercials, when u sign on to AOL. Also lets not forget a very important fact that soundscan is a Record Store Order and reorder not an actual over the counter sale. I know people dont believe that but lets just say a record store orders 500 of the Taylor Hicks single and someone steals all of them, do u think that 500 dont get counted??? Trust me its record store orders (at least chains that qualify). So i dont buy into numbers and charts, im not impressed when someone has a number one anymore, doesnt mean anything, mainly because anyone can have one.

I only heard about a minute from this song and all i know is Magazines like BLENDER have some nerve putting artists like Richard Marx, Toto, Air Supply, Journey on their 50 Worst Artists of all time and then praising people Like Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Hicks and Good Charolette.

Well i heard Beyonce, same old song, i like her, but I can see hanging with Prince didnt rub off on her at all. Janet well, sorry but i hate collabos, youre good on your own, have some confidence in yourself, i think its time for these "Collabos" to go away. I also heard the new Jessica Simpson song and of the 3 of these ladies hers is the better, none of them are anything special, though i like all 3 ladies, they just seem to be giving in to the mainstream and not trusting themselves to at least grow a little.

My other problem with collabos/duets, is now they are TOTALLY done for commercial success, and 99% of the time the artists dont even MEET!!!
One comes in does their part then they send it to whomever and they do their part of rap or whatever it may be. Im not saying that duets shouldnt happen but unless the 2 artists are jamming together in a studio or sharing the mic in the studio, its nothing more than a marketing tool to help sell your product, that you arent confident in yourself. Its mainly a label thing, i know, but can we say this whole thing has been overdone.

That's not the song lol . It's a ballad and it's called "Do I Make You Proud". It's not bad to me. boxed

The best part is that nobody knows what the song is....they release these grand ballads and they hit number one but they are even less memorable than the stuff that's on the radio because radio won't play it cause it's so boring and overproducded. Imagine a Diane Warren ballad....only less subtle! I think the b-side is "Takin It To the Streets", which I think most people know (I haven't seen the commerical but I guess that would be the song he sings).

And while CD singles are hard to find (even the few artists that still release maxis like Madonna have trouble keeping them in stores) this one is sold just about anywhere CDs are sold. Hell, at the drug store the other day I think I saw the old American Idol's single!

I know but they stock this thing like it's an album. I'm almost sure if you walk into any store that sells CDs, they'll have this mixed in there.

i picked up a copy at walmart--"do i make you proud" is one of those over the top songs that is full of saccharin, but Taylor (who i wanted to win AI from his first audition) pulls it out. on "taking it to the streets", honestly, you'd be hard-pressed to think that it wasn't michael mcdonald singing. TH does a really good job. biggrin
