Actually, most of my recent music purchases have been DVDs. I haven't been record shopping for a long time. I hate being on a budget.

Are you just becoming familiar with their work? Because I thought the same thing at first too. I don't anymore. Yes, they are pretty new to me... I remember I thought something similar when I first heard JD's Substance (my first JD album)... it took me some time to get into (relatively long). Ceremony, Procession, Blue Mondy, Love Bizarre Triangle are really good. I have to listen some more, for sure. The side two of the Singles (containing songs 1988 up to their latest releases - Krafty etc.), is a bit different, since I am much more into the earlier 80s popular music, but I'll see & hear.

Do you have JD's albums other than Substance? All BUT Still & the two live albums. Seems hard to get in Vienna. Basically I was speechless after I had listened through Closer and Unknown Pleasures. There is no single thing going wrong in these albums. This is a rare experience! It's a shame I did not experience them earlier. I problaby would never heard of them, if it wasn't my nephew who had bought an album and borrowed it to me.

They never lose their impact with time either. I can never casually listen to Joy Division. They shake me to the core every time.

Thanks for the heads up on “The Avalanche” – I will definitely check that out! How’s “Michigan”? As for Lady Sovereign, I think you’ll be fairly perturbed by “Vertically Challenged.” It contains eight tracks, but only five songs – the other three are remixes. I like it quite a bit, but that’s just me. If I were you (given your disdain for EPs), I’d wait for a full length release. And Anxy - were I a female rapper, I’d record an album entitled “Vagally Challenged” and dedicate each and every track to you. "She made me glad to be a man"

2. "Vertically Challenged," Lady Sovereign 3. "ELO's Greatest Hits," ELO 4. "Loose Fur," Loose Fur 5. "The Life Aquatic" soundtrack, Seu Jorge Yum! I love the Seu Jorge soundtrack, and of course Sufjan is always a good choice. If you like "Illinoise", you should also get his latest CD, "The Avalanche" - it's all outtakes from the Illinoise album, and it's wonderful. But I could listen to him singing the phone book and be blissed out. Is the Lady Sovereign thingie good? I keep wanting to hear her, but I don't like e.p.s and I keep hoping she'll put out a full album...should I get over myself and check her out? The only thing I have of Sufjan Stevens is Michigan. I listened to the first track, Flint, and thought - woah. This is going to be a fucking awesome CD. And then I got lost as the tracks seemed to be more and more jingly and banjoey (except for the pretty instrumentals like the waterfall one. I forget its name) and less and less like Flint. Are Illinois / Avalanche similarly jingly? (crap adjective, I know, but I don't know how else to describe it. )

'illinois' is quirky and folky and poppy all the way through. it kinda reminds me of the artier side of talking heads, with the odd ingredients of nick drake and phillip glass thrown in. "illinoise" was originally going to be a double album, but sufjan was talked into paring it down. "the avalanche" is the intended disc 2, with some demos and alternate versions thrown in. he actually went back and re-mixed and re-tooled the tracks for the release of "the avalanche" this summer, so it's not just a tossed-out odds'n'sods disc...and it shows! great stuff.

That's the only album I own that I'm unable to listen to from start to finish. That's not to say that I dislike it - it's just that I find it's too much of one thing for too long. If nothing else, it makes good background music when I'm handing out treats on Halloween night.
