I like Alicia Keys, but as someone as said she is overrated because many there are not many artists out there who actually sing and play instruments anymore. But people like Roberta Flack were doing that before Alicia was born..

Mos def her PHONY act is what bothers me the most. I could give 2 shits about her being overrated. I don't pay no mind to the press/media nowadays when it comes to selecting a good newcomer anyways.
But I don't buy the whole "I carry a razor blade in my purse" bullshit. Generally speaking, its the IN thing nowdays to see everybody and their momma including lil' white girls from the sburbs trying to gain street credibility, let alone her corny ass. Sadly, the image NEVER last. Whitney tried desparatly to live up to an image which never belonged to her, same thing is happening with Alicia. Same shit, different day. And the one to blame is Clive Davis, not even Alicia Keys. [Edited 6/23/06 11:55am]

OK, so now AK has contributed so much to our country and culture that not only is she referred to on a first-name only basis, but she is given equal billing with Marvin Gaye? I don't mean to start a Marvin thread, here, but Marvin Gaye was just about God incarnated on Earth as a musician. He was larger than music in so many ways. He was the soul of this country. Stevie Wonder (he owns radio-station KJLH in Los Angeles) needs to be made aware if he is not of this, and checked for employing the idiots responsible for this sacriligious billboard campaign. It is deeply offensive. Marvin is sacred. You do not fuck around with Marvin Gaye's legacy like this. AK is drunk with fantasies of being some sort of modern-day Lyn Collins for the multi-cultural masses. What a bunch of shit! She has contributed NOTHING positive to this country - all she's done is make her audience *dumber* about music and culture and America than they already were. If this were the 70s AT BEST she'd be playing to drunks at the corner bar to get by. And people that say she's cute, well...to each his/her own...but I think a move to Los Angeles is in order for some of y'all. A stint in LA will cure most of you of thinking this girl is cute. Further, I bet if you asked the average Alicia Keys "fan" to name THREE of their favorite AK songs, most of them could not name more than one or two off the top of their heads. For crying out loud, *they* don't even *really* like her! They have just been *told* relentlessly by the media that they *should* and that they *do*, and so they *think* they do. This is so, so, so true!!!! I agree with everything you said. As regards the Prince thing, it's truly pathetic how he associates himself with any young, popular act who likes him. The sad thing is I think when it's convenient he can genuinely convince himself that these pygmys are really good. I just hope now he's back in touch with Wendy & Lisa they can straighten the brother out. He's got his priorities seriously mixed up.

I've heard her vocals go off key many times. I hear many vocalists tha aren't singing to a track go off key. Most people don't have perfect pitch. You at last know its live instead of a track and I respect that because many, many shows are tracked these days and the audience doesn't know it because it can be done so well that you can't tell easily. The problem is how she was presented to the public. She was presented as this greater-than-thou musical prodigy instead of being presented as a regular singer and leaving perception to the public. Okay, Alicia is a good pianist. I'd hire her for gigs. The "cute" thing does work towards her advantage, but that's the way it is in the business, especially for females. Her singing, to me, is tolerable and slightly better than her most of her female counterparts, even when she's off key. Because let's just be honest, MOST females in the R&B/Pop game are not singers--they're vocalists. As for her songwriting and production, it's OK. I can at least appreciate the honesty and the fact that she's not singing about mindlessness. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

I was sorta looking for a Roberta Flack styled artist, which would have been off the hook. I hadn't heard her album, just her singles, which I couldn't get with. The only reason I went was because I went with this girl who had passes. The P version of "How Come" which SHOULD have been a breeze for a female who plays piano to pull off, she didn't even come close. It sounded awkward and un-natural and forced. I don't doubt that she didn't really dig the song, but it came across as trying to gain credibility by covering a Prince b-side. I got the notion of the next Roberta Flack crap from all the hype the media was building up about Alcia. Hell, I thought, at least she dresses like Roberta Flack did in the early 70's. Live, although I thought she had talent for someone her age, it was far from any form of a prodigy and NO where near Roberta Flack status, no female Stevie Wonder and all the other way out comments the media was pushing. She STILL needs to do other songwriter's material and she should definately, at the very most, co-write with some seasoned veterans. Her material, more than anything, exposes her weaknes. Everyone knows why she's the media's darling and it's her looks. Her album was waay below par with India's but India doesn't look like Alicia and Alicia fit's America's standard of what beauty is. Still, as far as talent, Alicia can't hold a candle to Arie, but sadly, we all know it's not just about that. Because if it was, India would have had those awards and not got shut down like she did. Very good topic Graycap. My opinion? 1).Yes. When Alicia first came out with "I Keep Fallin" one of my coworkers pointed out that the piano line sounds like James Brown's "It's A Man's World" 2)Her Voice isn't the strongest. I don't know about singing off key, But during "Unplugged" Her voice started out srong. But towards the end she sounded like Janet Jackson. 3) She's no George Duke on Piano. She's good not great. And as far as looks are concerned, I'll be very honest. If Indie Arie had Alicia Keyes looks, Her career would've skyrocketed. I'm not saying that Indie Arie is ugly. She's good looking to me. But..... Well I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, If Alicia were full figured like Jill Scott. or if her features were more afican-looking like Arie. She would'nt be as popular. I like both artists but if given a choice I would buy a Indie Arie cd.The following is why I believe her to be overrated: 1. Almost half of her songs are based on old classics regardless of how clever she tries 2 hide that fact. 2. Her voice during live performances ALWAYS goes out of key in EVERY song. 3. This thread is funny to me on so many levels
Like someone said, she is not overrated, but overhyped. She is very talented. She can play the piano very well, far beyond mediocre. There are some songs I really like by her. When I first heard fallin' I was impressed and I kept hearing those key words "prodigy" "incomparable" shit like that. I was sucker for it and bought the album. I couldn't finish it. I was angry over her version of How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore. She was only 1 when the b-side was released. I can only assume she heard it with the b-sides where released in '93. Why did she have to do THAT song of all songs??? I'm still pissed about that, but apparently Prince liked it. I finally listened to the album a few months ago all the way through. Still not floored or impressed like I thought I should be. Unfortunately, these youngs folks don't know shit about music and think she is authentic because it sounds familiar to them but they don't know why. Old folks like it because it brings nostalgia to their lives Keep in mind: 1. She has made only 2 studio albums. TWO 2. She has only been in the business as an artist 5 years Give her a chance to grow and hopefully live up to the hype 3. Her voice isn't any better or worse than the best or worse out there. Look at the other r&b female artists around her age. They all sing the same basically. She's not a bad singer. My only hope is that she stops trying to sing out of her range. I've witnessed this by her a few times. Know you limits or a least get the proper training to expand your limit. Don't just bust out with some shit at a performance 4. It's obvious she wants to be a soul artist 5. as to Almost half of her songs are based on old classics regardless of how clever she tries 2 hide that fact. The same can be said about Erykah Badu. She's trying to be Billie Holiday reincarnated 6. Yes, her looks help, but that doesn't negate she had to work hard to get her deal Also, on her site she seems more real and vulnerable. She's a smart woman. She knows how to say alot and make her fans feel like she is sharing sooo much when she is really not sharing anything at all. I marvel at this because they don't get it [Edited 6/24/06 1:01am]

yeah yeah yeah, of course she's overrated, who isn't these days? What really bothers me is that, although she is kind of hot, she looks disturbingly like Ralph Macchio in drag.
.....maybe its just me [Edited 6/24/06 3:31am] "Don't hate me cos I'm beautiful"
