truth be told, rap hasn't been the same since Biggie Smalls died...it picked up a little (1998) with the launch of DMX, but 2000 on has been very dissapointing for people who actually like hip hop and understand that its an art form, not just noise.

Whatever. Biggie was just as big a misogynist as the current asshole rappers. Bitches and hos, cars and jewelry. God. There's a lot more to life. It is just so bizarre how shitloads of women swoon over these clowns. lol

The creator of this thread shouldnt be so judgemental. I know a lot of rap is about hos, drugs, shooting people, dont step 2 me, bling bling and sex. But hey its MUSIC!!!!! Not rules for living. I love the beats the lyrical skills and dope ass sounds it has. I think Jay Z, Kanye West, G Unit and Em all kick ass even if their lyrics are all shit. (Xcept Kanye whose a positive rapper yo)

That's the way things used to happen. Styles used to last approximately five years or so and move on to something else.

In the early 1990s, I kept waiting for a change in 1995. In 1995, I waited for the year 2000. We are in 2006 and shit hop still dominates. It's very clear to me now that things are never going to change because it's a cheap ass form of music to make and major corporations and record companies are going to keep everything else out that might threaten it. Shit hop has practically dominated R&B radio for 15 years now. It has dominated so long that there is a whole generation that was born into it and has never seen a change. Hell, I count even count the changes in music by the time I was 15.

well during the mid 90's hip hop and rap was good... but now thats is 2006... rap really sucks now.... if it keeps it up... at the rate its going... its NOT going to dominate... and hip hop didnt dominate until 2000
s.... if you ask random people off the street... who is Nicole Ray, Gansta Boo, Silk the shocker, and some songs from the mid 90's that mary j. blidge and Missy E. sang..... they wont be able to tell you unless they are black.... but if you ask them about 50 cent they will be able to tell you cause he came around during the 2000's when rap is in... but of course everyone knows about tupac and biggie... they might not know their music but they heard of their names.

um thanks for respecting my opinion... confused confused

but its true... ask a non black off the street what song missy had out during 1995... and they wont be able to tell you... ask them who Nicole ray is.... but anywyas like i said.. rap is really popular now... so everyone knows about it... i remember that many black videos wouldnt even get played on MTV or VH1 until the 2000's name 20 rap songs from the 90's that hit number one on the billboard charts... and then name 20 rap songs from the 2000's that hit number one... and you can see that rap wasnt NOT popular. it was only popular amoung blacks during the 90's...

The first misogynistic rap dates from the mid 80s at least by 88 you had NWA rappin about hos and Ice T spouting Girls LGBNAF (Some of the dopeset raps ever done). Shooting people and drive bys and shit go back at least to 1987, and that was when they were mainstreamed in the movie Colors. Who knows how long it had been going on b4 then. Bling at least goes back to the Eric B and Rakim album cover of 1986 with them with diamond shit on, and maybe even to Mr T's chains.
The whole thing was definitely tied together with NWA and refined with Dr Dre and Dogg Pound by 92, 14 years ago. Not to support it, but a musical "fad" that has lasted 20 years (right or wrong) can't be that disposable.

Duh. I just wanted to point out home incredibly lame "revolutionary artists" like Dre and Tupac really were. At the heart of it, they were in it for money and ass. NWA was slightly different in that they weren't really in the mainstream (until the very end). But yeah, they were all lame. Talented rappers, yes, but not that socially conscious, and pretty lame. Like me.

I liked very little rap in the mid 1990s. I only like the artists that could jam like 95 South, Dis and Dat, 69 Boyz, Quad City DJs, The Dogs, 2 Live Crew, etc. Other than folks like that, the majority of rap was stripped down, midtempo, sampled, and boring. As far as people's "lord and savior" Tupac or Biggie, they bored the hell out of me because they were the same midtempo boring style as the rest of them. I hear the same type today....stripped down, midtempo beat, and samples.

I agree. I might could even overlook the stupid bullshit they talked if they had good music behind them instead of that midtempo boring shit.

I blame 2 Live Crew. They suck.

I never had a problem with explicit lyrics. In fact, I love explicit lyrics. lol They could talk some stupid shit when they wanted too also but like I said before, I can overlook stupid talk if there's some jammin' going on behind it.

I finally dropped them after I got tired of hearing "Planet Rock" and "Egypt, Egypt" sampled in every way possible. As much as those are jams, the same thing sampled over and over gets boring after a while.

There is some truth to this thread. The truth is the rap artists that are
being pimped to portray an artificial thug image to sell to the public. Yes that
is bullshit. The sad part is the good rap shit like common,de la soul, the roots, mos def,and the game's most underrated rapper talib kweli aren't being properly marketed. When 50 cent or nelly come out with their shit it is over marketed to the full extent whether it is hot or not. Common has always been the shit but he has never fully gotten his due until he signed on with kanye west's label. Be was a good cd but it was not better than his previous two electric circus and like water for chocolate. Hey as long as good rappers such as the aforementioned continue to be marketed the way they are then the public will have to be subjected to listening to a bunch a bullshit like dem franchise boys,p shitty, and nelly or is that jelly. mad
Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint
