"Just doing my research and listening to Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway — their whole form of swing music is basically hip-hop," Mr. Barber said. "They even talk about reefer and drinking and chasing girls and shooting and getting stabbed. It's like taking a journey back in time and seeing hip-hop artists onstage."
