They have a bit more "textured" sound to them than other brass instruments due to the extra length of the horn itself, I'd figure. The great amount of curves make the flow of air more irregular and less straighforward than, say, on a cornet. And the bell itself is very wide compared to the rest of the horn itself which results in a softer sound, without such an aggressive attack.
