i've been a fan of yours since control. i practically cried when i couldn't get tickets to the rhythm nation tour and i did cry when i got to see the velvet rope show. i've enjoyed every record you've released...yes, janet, even those two. i think damita jo is one of your best, f everyone else! with all that said, and in all due respect, i need you to put some clothes on. its not cute anymore...its kinda sad. i feel like you think you have nothing else to offer outside of tits and ass. i don't know what the new song/record sounds like but i'm sure i'll love it. you're my favorite female pop star. i don't want you to change; you don't have to recreate yourself with each record. you've done this, though, and we all know you are sexy as hell. you know what else is sexy? a woman who knows she doesn't have to rely on her "assets" to make an entrance (so to speak). at 40 years old if all you have to offer is skin shots and fun songs, something went wrong somewhere. there's a lot shit going on in the world, j, and very little of it has to do with sex. tons of material is waiting for your interest. you must have something to say about the world we live in, about the world that has only become harder since rhythm nation 1814. please don't prove me wrong. Wow, high expectations for Janet when you thought Confessions on a Dancefloor was brilliant. It's okay for Madonna to act sexy, wear hot pants and flesh-baring tops and stick a mic down her crotch during live performances, and all the while making dumb, fun, completely disposable pop music, but if Janet releases a sexy pic, it's the end of the world. Y'all act like she should be preaching to the world about social ills, injustice and harsher punishments for parole violators. Judge Janet, on at 5. I just don't get the people on this forum. [Edited 6/16/06 4:25am] Now you're acting silly. Nobody's acting like its the end of the world. The bottom line is unlike you, when I see the same thing over and over and over, I get bored with it as it shows a lack of creativity. Janet is all about a tits and ass show, and frankly, its getting tired, especially since that is all you see in entertainment. Janet has GREAT songs, but it's boiled down to concerts that is over-choreographed and constant half-naked pictures. It's fine that its okay with some people, but others just want something more unique.

The woman just turned 40 and she's still leaving messages on her website that sound like something Britney would come up with. 'Thank u sooooo much'
If she giggles and moans her way through this CD, then I really will be done with her. My fandom has been tested repeatedly since 2001, and this will be the project that either brings me back to her or sends me away permanently. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

[Edited 6/16/06 4:25am] i don't know if you spotted all the compliments in my "dear janet" letter but there is a thing called constructive criticism. whether or not i think madonna's latest was brilliant (i do) is completely irrelevant to how i feel about janet's image. since ray of light madonna has been saying something deeper than "let's love, let's have fun, let's go to the islands and live a fantasy." there were three records in a row that went deeper than a good time...and how quickly you forget that by the time american life came, while i liked the record a lot, i kept saying how madonna needed to change her style up. like anything else served to you over years, you get tired. even if we call the velvet rope a change in image (and it did have a great theme and some serious introspection) that was over a decade ago. its time for something new. and not because i'm bored...like i said, i loved damita jo and was salty as hell ol' girl didn't embark on a tour (and yes, i thought nipplegate was ridiculous with all the things i see on tv). its time for something new because janet can do it, because she MUST have something to say about things other than sex. she must.

I'm there with 'ya, man. Janet has always been up there amongst my favorites. When I was growing up, 'Rhythm Nation' was inescapable. My mom had it, my sister had it, my aunts and uncles had it. My cousins used to make up dances to it. When I got away from pop music, 1814 was one of the few albums of it's type that came along with me into my Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd phase. By 2001, my Janet love had reached fever pitch; I was so excited for 'All For You', that I went to every single record store in my hometown for an entire week before the record came out so that I could buy it early. I shouldn't have been so excited; 'All For You' ended up being a disappointment. Saw her twice on the AFY tour, and it was exactly the same show I'd seen for TVR. Still screamed myself hoarse from the 6th row center. .I still bought 'Damita' on the day of release. Still played the shit out of the 7 or 8 good tracks on the album; still thought 'All Nite (Don't Stop)' was among the best stuff she'd ever done. However, by 2006, I really don't have the faith in Janet that I did in '01. I'm tired of hearing about her vagina; I'm sick of the mindless interludes. If she giggles even once on this album, it'll be too much. She'd better just skip the rainstorm altogether. It's PLAYED, Janet. She's done the fake topless thing on so many albums and single covers that she'd either better show her areola on the wrapper or cover herself the hell up. I realize that at this point, arguing about Janet's (lack of) maturity is akin to discussing Michael Jackson's sexuality or Madonna's songwriting skills, but what the hell. Roll on the 'org cliches. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

see, and i don't even need a drastic change. the laughter is janet, the interludes are janet. i'm cool with them on every record (and they have been on almost every record). i don't need ol' girl to don a suit and suddenly become miss serious of all seriosity (). i just think when everyone else is doing it -- and has been doing it for years now -- its time for the innovators to step up the game the way they did in the beginning. remind us why we loved them in the beginning.

Well, I wouldn't mind the interludes if they hadn't become just so absurd. I couldn't believe how vapid she sounded on Damita Jo. 'Of course I love music'. I never thought Janet was any sort of intellectual. I'm not one of the people that thought TVR was a "life changing" album. Janet never really had a very deep thought in her head. Fame is hard, racism is bad, homophobia sucks, don't abuse your spouse. Now let's do a snappy dance move and before you know it, it'll be the sex segment of the album. It's not profound by any stretch of the imagination, but at least it was interesting. At least she was trying. I'm just not so sure anymore. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Exactly! I've been a fan of Janet since the 1980s. I was in first grade when my mom bought me Rhythm Nation. I have stuck with her for 17 years. If I want to bitch a little bit about the content of her album, I feel like I have earned the right to do so. Janet is not your mother. Stop acting like I just insulted the woman that gave you life. I think it's the coy, premature, sex kitten-y way Janet goes about her "still sexy in my 40's" image as opposed to the brash, slightly comical ballsiness of Madge and slickness of ol' P that makes it more annoying for some. That's how it is for me, at least.

Oof - good point. Yeah... don't get me wrong, though: I still think Janet could redeem herself. All she needs to do, IMO, is go back to doing what she did best: Recording quality, (mostly) classy pop music that was relatably autobiographical/socially conscious and somehow reinventive with each successive work. I know she still has it in her somewhere.

Word. word nothing. when was the last time prince wore a g string? when was the last time we saw anything but a few buttons undone on p's chest? as for madonna...i've heard a lot of people talking about her awful outfits and how she needs to act her age and yada yada yada. shit, half of the gossip sites (a socialite's life, dlisted, etc) refer to her as Vadge. its not a compliment, by the way. the reason you don't hear it so vocally about those two artists mentioned above is because they don't flaunt it as ridiculously and continuously as janet has been. its ALL she does these days. really. its ALL she does. now. word.

Fuck it. People have already made up their minds to hate this record. Kylie and Madge and every other female pop star under the sun - sexy is OK and we love it and hey, they're just making great pop music, but Janet does it and oops, she needs a change of pace. Can't just enjoy it for what it is.

Janet was criticized by somebody(bodies) for doing the same thing that Madonna does without critique. I've been bored with it by both of them for some time but have come to expect it.
