They’re about the “what-if” – specifically what we don’t know and what might have been. “If it came out,” we ask, “how would this have changed things?” They’re like Mark David Chapman getting bored and going home on December 8th, 1980, or Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix actually making it into the studio with Gil Evans. We’ll never know. But we can dream – and we often do, of a music that surpasses everything we’ve heard, showing us something we’ve never seen, and in many cases, never will." I know about a private recording of Jimi with John Coltrane .

For some reason, WB never bothered promoting their 80's stuff over here. A few sporadic hits no doubt, but nothing like the sucsess of "look away" or "what kind of man would i be" had in the US

Nobody's mentioned the THREE albums that the Black Crowes recorded in the mid 90s that have never been released.
Sweet Pickle Salad: only five songs from the sessions have been leaked, with the band's blessing too. This is a legendary session that included members of Jellyfish and Lenny Kravitz's tourband. Talk about "songs a year long.." these are some real EPICS and are worth tracking down. My favorite is "Limits". The Band: Full album from '97 or so. Not much is known about this one, but it's a solid album with songs like "my heart's killing me", "never forget this song" and "if it ever stops raining". And of course... "Tall". This would have been the Crowes' SOTT if it had been released. A monster double album, with songs like "bitter bitter you", "Exit" "thunderstorm 6:54 pm" and of course the CLASSIC "Title Song" which I will put up against anything they ever officially released. A live version of "title song" is on their live album but it's a sloppy, poor version. The studio version SMOKES. all of these albums are readily available on your favorite P2P in GREAT quality - if you're a fan of the Crowes, go find 'em. You won't regret it. Keep your headphones on.

Q Tip - everything since amplified
Mos Def/Mau Maus - unreleased live album (2001) Lou Reed - unreleased live album (1997) Lou Reed - Timerocker (rejected by WB in 1996/97) David Bowie - Toy (2000/01) The Velvet Underground - "Fourth" album, recorded in between their eponymous third album and Loaded. Most of it was later released on the VU and Another View compilations though. Bruce Springsteen - The Ties That Bind (1979) - was going to be the follow up to Darkness On The Edge of Town, but it went unreleased when he decided to expand the album into what became The River. Bruce Springsteen - 1993 - cut a whole album with his MTV Unplugged band. Unreleased, but includes Nothing Man which later ended up on The Rising. Bruce Springsteen - Tom Joad 2 - a sequel to The Ghost of Tom Joad, recorded in 1997 at the end of the two year solo world. Some of the songs appeared on Devils & Dust. Brothers under the Bridge appeared on Tracks. Mick Jagger & the Red Devils - Unreleased, heavily bootlegged blues album from 1993. There are three sides to every story. Also dont forget Funkadelics album "By the way of the drum"
[Edited 6/18/06 5:29am] 1984's never-released Funkadelic album "By Way of the Drum" made it into the "Buried Treasure" feature in the current Entertainment Weekly issue (#795, cover date: December 3, 2004). EW's Michael Endelman writes: >> It's not the funk rock holy grail, but By Way of the Drum, a trippy gem from Funkadelic, is so rare even George Clinton doesn't own it. "If you can find one, send me a copy," he says. "I haven't heard that in 15 years!" In the early 1980s, Clinton signed a deal with MCA Records, which expected catchy electro-funk in the vein of his '83 hit single "Atomic Dog." What they received instead was a fusion of head-tripping psychedelic rock and body-shaking drum-machine beats. (A funked-up cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" is particularly out-there.) MCA rejected the album with a brusque letter: "We would like to inform you that we will not be releasing the album by your 'so-called' concept group, Funkadelic." The master tapes have gone missing, but some hardcore Funkadelic collectors treasure hissy cassettes of the surprisingly sweet set. << [Edited 6/18/06 5:32am]

He planned to, but nothing went beyond drawing board stage. It was when he'd started releasing stuff on his Island back label, Durban Poison, but the project fizzled out when he left the label. Also cancelled was another Product of the Environment spoken word album featuring boxers past and present. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. Is that the one produced by Trevor Horn? I don't think anyone has mentioned The Who "Lifehouse Project", which become the "Who's Next" album. That's pretty legendary for sure. I was also gonna say Funkadelic's "By Way of the Drum". Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Yeah, Friendly Fire was produced by Trevor Horn and I heard somewhere that W&L stopped it since it was taking so long and they felt he zapped any kind of soul the album might have had. However, I have a heard a few tracks from it...including Guise of Love, Digging to China, and Madmen Swim Upstream which are all quality tracks and as good as anything on Eroica or Girl Bros. Wasn't Big Bowl of Cherries supposed to be on it too? Other W&L fans here on the Org may have to back me up on that one...

I don't know what the tracklist was and I've never heard any of the tracks from these sessions. I've always wondered what they sound like though because I'm a big fan of both parties. I guess I should start "digging". Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.
