Pass the Dutchie by Musical Youth

I still dig this song whenever I hear it... the harmonies, the rastafarian vocal, beat and bass.

Whatever happened... I heard one of them died violently... ???

Your comments?

I like the song they did with Donna Summer in 1983,"Unconditional Love"

give me your unconditional love
the kind of love I deserve
the kind I want to return

give me your unconditional love

the kind I want to return

i hate to break it to you guys, but they were kinda like a jamaican Milli Vanilli. one of the members dad was a famous reggae performer in jamaica who put this act together and also did all of the music for them. of course the vocals are real, but they never played their instruments. confused Also, did you know this song was about marijuana? lol

It's a lot better than singing about shooting people and bitches and ho's. Besides, it's medicinal wink

Plans to re-form were initially scotched when Patrick Waite, who had gone on to a career of juvenile crime, died of natural causes (hereditary heart condition) whilst awaiting a court appearance on drug charges. The Grant brothers remained involved in music, while Dennis Seaton released a solo set in 1989, before going on to form his own band, XMY.

However, by 2003 Musical Youth were back, appearing in a 1980s nostalgia tour. By 2005, now reduced to just a duo of Michael Grant and Dennis Seaton, Musical Youth performed at Wiesen festival in Austria.

"Pass the Dutchie" is a cover. The original was called "Pass the Cutchie(sp?)", which was about marijuana. The words "Cutchie" and "herb" were replaced by "Dutchie" and "food" because of the original's meanings. wink

Correct! Pass The Kutchie was about passing around a joint. The lyrics were changed to Pass The Dutchie which they explained in interviews at the time as a cooking pot.
They were still singing about "pot" but in a subversive way wink

I seem to remember them performing on Saturday Night Live when the Dutchie song came out and it was live so they were actually playing. Whether they played on the record is another story.
Milli Vanilli? That should be reserved for groups that don't sing on the record and allow someone else to, then pass it off as themselves singing.
Maybe we should compare them to the Jackson5 instead. They did their vocals but others recorded the music.

Never liked that song ...

From the same year i bumped more on Third World's "Try Jah Love"
or Eddy Grant's "Electric Avenue" .

But (imo) the real deep sh#t was with groups like Black Uhuru , Sly & Robbie and the legendary Bob Marley .
