All For Who?

Who really wrote Janet Jackson hit?

http://www.msnbc.com/news/786146.asp

Did Janet Jackson rip off a hit tune? Songwriter Michael Ortega says he was stunned when he heard her song “All For You,” because, he claims, a good part of the song was nearly identical to a tune that Ortega had shopped to Jackson’s songwriters.

“I WROTE THE SONG in 1986 for my girlfriend, who I later married,” Ortega told the Scoop. He said his publishers played the tune for songwriters Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. “They were interested and wanted a tape, so I stopped a recording session I was in the middle of, and made a tape and sent it to them.” Ortega says he confirmed with their office that they received the tape, then never heard from them again.

So, he says, he and his publisher were shocked when they heard Jackson’s recording of the song — which became a number one hit and was nominated for a Grammy. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are listed as the songwriters, along with some others whose music is sampled on the song.

Ortega says he hired a musicologist who determined he had a legal case and he spoke to lawyers.

“My attorney anticipated backlash from the Jackson camp,” he says, “And to be honest, most lawyers I spoke to were terrified of the Jacksons.”

Beyond that, he says he was told that just filing a suit in a case like this can be prohibitively expensive. So, Ortega has set up a web site:

to let listeners decide.

A spokeswoman for Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis didn’t return requests for comment.

I have to stand up for this...

LETS HOPE AND PRAY this is not the case of thievery...
I have much respect for all ARTISTS...
I hope that if this is a coincidence that there is justifiable settling and it can be settled out of COURT...its bad enuff the RECORD LABELS ARE being total sharks and are now biting themselves...

I hope that all ARTISTS are being true to their GOD GIVEN talents and not taking anything from each other...

If anything all ARTISTS should stand up and unite together equally to GIVE Free WILLED TALENT a true source of being...UNITED...

Just like thoughts travel sometimes people come up with the same idea at the same time. Sometimes things happen just becuz they do...

I hope this is the case...
And continue your quest of the FIRE WITHIN...

GODBLESS ALL in their journey to VICTORY in their talents...

I checked out the website with samples of Ortega's 1986 version and after listening to his version I would say that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are going to have a hard time getting out of this one. It sounds like Janet's version is just a remake of the 1986 song. There is no way that it was a coincedence. I'll reserve any judgement until we hear from all parties involved though.
