The parts I don't like.

just cuz you don't like it doesn't mean its not perfect. on the flip side of that, just cuz i do like it doesn't mean it is perfect. its like this...everyone says (insert typical beatles record here) is a masterpiece. i can enjoy (insert same beatles record here) but i fail to see how its a masterpiece. yet, it is. whether i think so or not. the same goes with miseducation.

Cool, it's a masterpiece for you. Miseducation is nowhere near the Beatles' shit in terms of universal appreciation, though, and don't front like it is! wink

i think just like any music critic/magazine is going to put sgt pepper's on a list of the 100 best records, every music critic/magazine always puts miseducation in the same list.

it is universally excepted as a masterpiece.

But seriously, that's because it's new. How many of those lists put COLDPLAY on there since it came out in the last 10 years????

Music lists suck and you know it! lol There are always ten or fifteen current trendy "hot" records on there from the past decade or so that are clearly NOT classics. This has already lost its luster for a lot of people, and she is NOWHERE. She and Radiohead and Alanis are simply not among best records of all time, but they *are* critical darlings!

evillol BUT IT MAKES ALL THOSE TOP 100 LISTS!

Lists and critics prove nothin'. You like it or you don't. Now Ryan Reynolds liked it enough to hit that.

I hate Radiohead, too lol - their shit will never mean anything to me.

well you just have poor musical taste! lol

what are the qualifications of "masterpiece"? what are the requirements? did alanis's debut capture a spirit of music at the time? i think it did, i think jagged little pill captured something about that time. surely that sets its place in music history. i don't think its a masterpiece because i don't dig it that much. i also don't dig sgt pepper's but...

Bingo!

Discussing the definition of "masterpiece" is about as useful as debating what "musical genius" is. lol

ThreadBare

I think it was as close to a perfect melding of solid production and natural talent as we've seen in pop music in a long time. I think both were equally deserving of the credit.

Without that sort of production, Lauryn's follow-up fizzled. The sad part is it seem's like it's going to be a kind of one-off masterpiece.

Personally, I prefer Dionne Farris' gem, "Wildseed, Wildflower." That to me was even better. She didn't get the same media attention or promotion, unfortunately. I prefer her voice, her writing and that album's more organic and versatile production.

i also love the umplugged record. raw and real. not to mention incredibly personal and honest lyrics. i thought the 2nd disc was a lot more brave; she went out on a limb with that one and took a real beating for it.
