right in front of Stuyvesant Town http://www.pcvst.com/home.asp. I'm not sure what time of the day that was or if the young men lived there, but there are alotta of obnixous school kids around there and there's one bad corner like on 2nd and like 19th. I mean still, suprising, Too bad they didn't try that on west 13st in front of the LGBT center, those punks woulda caught a beat down if they did. I hate stories like this, especially if they were young Black men responsible for this.

it's a shame. Not really surprising, though. There is still a great deal of fear, hatred, and ignorance in this country. After all, the far-right sees fit to use gay marriage as a political issue to divide and conquer. Religions that are supposed to be about love instead spew hatred. It's sad that the hatred of individuals like the guys who did this attack is reinforced by politicians and religious leaders.

ok, you know i love ya, but i'm calling bullshit on you.

when someone gets his ass beat for being gay in the EAST VILLAGE OF NEW YORK CITY, it's a sad commentary. when someone who's an established personality in the gay community gets his ass beat the week before pride week, yeah - people are going to talk about it. as well they should if it happened ANYtime. and when a human being gets his ass beat in front of onlookers who can't be bothered to do a damn thing about it, then yes - maybe there should be some dialog about the shit.

i'm not saying people should fixate on what happened to kevin aviance. but if people are able to talk through their fears as a result of this, then a messed-up incident has shown its silver lining.

sorry, 'ness. i understand it's cool to play the contrarian card, but you might wanna save it for when you can really use it. nod

and not talking about it accomplishes what?

i'm not saying people should focus on victimization every moment of their lives, but sometimes knowing people aren't alone in their fear makes the fear go away...or at least it gives the fear less power.

Another update from the NY Daily News:

Like 'your soul was pulled out'

BY JESS WISLOSKI, BARBARA ROSS and NANCY DILLON

The world-famous drag queen beaten by a gang of homophobic thugs left a Manhattan hospital yesterday as community leaders renewed their calls for justice.

"You don't know how it feels until this happens to you. It feels like someone pulled your soul out," victim Kevin Aviance, 38, said through his lawyer.

The nightclub legend, whose songs have topped the Billboard dance charts, suffered a broken jaw and knee after four young males, yelling anti-gay slurs, beat him to the ground about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the East Village.

Gerard Johnson, 16, and Gregory Archie, 18, both of Manhattan; Akino George, 20, of the Bronx, and Jarrell Sears, 20, of Newark, were arrested in the attack.

They face eight to 25 years in prison if convicted of first-degree assault as a hate crime. Johnson, who has a pending robbery case, and Sears, whose record includes a drug arrest, were .arraigned last night and held on $50,000 bond.

"What happened to Kevin over the weekend is just outrageous," said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan). "I hope the district attorney prosecutes those responsible to the fullest extent of the law, and that this crime is prosecuted fully as the hate crime that it was."

Quinn, who is gay, had equally strong words for the witnesses who allegedly did nothing as Aviance was dragged down the sidewalk.

"When New Yorkers see a victim of a crime, they have a responsibility to pick up the phone and call 911," Quinn said.

"We can't ever go back to the days of people just closing their windows when they hear someone in trouble."

Aviance, who clutched a bouquet of yellow roses and a framed photo of himself in full makeup as he was wheeled out of Beth Israel Medical Center, is expected to appear in court Thursday to identify his attackers.

Publicist Len Evans said Aviance's jaw will be wired shut for about 21/2 weeks, possibly through his appearance at this month's Gay Pride Parade.

"This is his month to shine and make money. He performs all through the month of June, and realistically the doctors don't think he can do it," Evans said.

"I don't think he realizes that when the wiring is taken off his jaw, he won't be able to move his mouth like he used to."

why are these rags trolling for some kind of justification? the guy was brutally attacked. unless kevin aviance was aiming a bazooka at those guys or something, there is NO excuse.

you know what else bothers me about this?

all the stories i've read about this attack stressed that he was "dressed like a boy" when he was attacked.

what the hell difference should it make?

there's a pretty big transgender population in NYC...are they "asking" to be beaten up whenever they step out in public? there are all kinds of people in the city who dress and present themselves in all kinds of ways, be it because of gender expression, religion, sexuality, culture, personal asthetic, whatever.

being "dressed like a boy" should not have been any kind of qualifier in the reportage.

Exactly. It would have been more "understandable" if he had been dressed in drag? "But he was conforming at that moment! That's what makes it outrageous!" Give me a fucking break. It's completely irrelevant.

I'm not a huge fan of Kevin Aviance either but he does his thang. Those motherfuckers should be tied up and put on the NYC GAY PRIDE PARADE float, naked. So that everyone can laugh at them.

I don't care if he was minding his own business or if he actually was flirting. They had no right to put their hands on him unless he got violent with them first.

If a gay man flirts with a man off the street, the man on the street has two options. He can either give up the dick or say three little words....

"I'm not interested".

I don't see men beating women's asses that flirt with them. Also, they sure as hell don't mind flirting with women that they know are lesbians. I don't see the lesbians beating their asses either.

I've never heard of this entertainer but he must not be too big of a star to be alone like that. I'd like to see them fuck with someone like Elton John. It would absolutely give me an orgasm to read the headlines the next morning.....

"One of Elton John's bodyguard's shoe is being surgically removed from gay basher's ass".

He's had a few hit songs in the clubs. I remember a few years ago his song "Alive" used to get played a lot on the Music Choice dance channel on cable. I think it was a #1 dance hit in Billboard.

Thank you! I'm a queer chick, but when men flirt with me I take it as a compliment. I may not be interested, but as long as there's no disrespect involved I'm more flattered than pissed. And if there is disrespect involved, well, look for a headline like vainandy's minus the bodyguard.

The fact that this happend in NYC is very scary, Im from NYC and things like this usually happen in areas of Brooklyn and Queens which are very "racist" areas, But NYC, the Village, stuff like that never occurs, sad, but looking at their ages, its the 16-21 generation that is filled with "hate and racism".

who are the racists in that area? I heard about the guy who was bashed by the italians.....
