Ok, why did I start crying while watching that video? sad

Minnie's voice was so pure. It was truly a gift from God.

It pisses me off when critics compare Mariah to her. Only in Mariah's dreams could she sound as good as Minnie. And to think Minnie was only months away from dying when she performed that day. Even sick, she sings circles around these so-called divas.

I have to imagine that Maya can't help but wonder what her life would have been like had her mother made it through cancer.

For real. Wasn't "Inside My Love" a Top Five R&B hit and "Memory Lane" a hit as well?

I heard somewhere that she died a few days after that performance of "Memory Lane".

One of my fav songs of her is "Here We Go"....
It's a lazy afternoon
Just a kind of a day made for lovin' you
Soon the evening breezes will start to blow
Baby, grab your hat now 'cause here we go

An Update From Maya Rudolph

The P*Funk Review first put up the Minnie Riperton page about a year and a half ago and since that time I have received many letters from Minnie Riperton fans all over the world asking me questions about Minnie, her music and her family. The web page is one of the most popular one's here on the site and I have been quite pleased with the overall feedback.

Recently I came into contact with Maya Rudolph, Minnie's daughter. She had heard about the page and she was curious about it. Maya agreed to answer some of the questions that I submitted to her, from web site visitors about her mother's music, her family and about herself.

Bellow are Maya's responses to the bulk of the questions that were submitted to her and also her response to the questions that she did not choose to answer at this time.

On a personal note, I think that Maya is one classy lady and as perhaps the "world's biggest Minnie Riperton fan" smile I am extremely proud of Maya.
Hopefully she will continue to remain in contact as time goes on.

--Bob Davis

-----

ABOUT HER FAMILY:
Yeah- I was afraid this would happen. I would rather leave the question answering up to you simply because the page is about my Mom and not about me or the rest of my family.
I don't think it's fair to any of my family members to just start talking about them over the web. There is a fine line between public and private information. I don't think any of the questions were strange or intrusive, but I think it is important to keep privacy private. We're just a regular family like any else, but that's all we've got and I think it's important to keep it that way.

ABOUT HERSELF:
About myself- yes, I am an actress as well as a musician and that is a choice I have made. I have never received any recognition because of my mother but simply for the work that I have done. That is something I think is important for me to keep in perspective because of the career choices I have made.
I hope this is understood. Like I said. I was really curious to see my name and information on a page, and I wanted you to know how appreciated it is. But I'd like for it to remain the way that it has been which is by and for the people my parents created music for.

THE AVAILABILITY OF MINNIE'S MUSIC:
As far as availablity on her music, the only CD's I am aware of are Perfect Angel, the Capitol greatest hits collection, Chess:Her Early years which is great, and some Chess compilations featuring her early girl group The Gems and her "other" name Andrea Davis. The only other stuff that made it to CD is probably English Blackmarket stuff... I don't know of anything else. I've seen one Rotary Connection CD and that's it. Chess and Capitol haven't been the greatest record companies, but then again are there any at all?

ABOUT THE MINNIE RIPERTON 10K RUN:
I guess the other thing to let people know is that every year here in LA on or around my Mom's birthday we have a run that raises money for breast cancer research and helps to raise awareness in the black community as well as in anyone else who shows up. It's fun. And people can find other Minnie Riperton fans there as well as young and old people or people who just love to run.

ABOUT THE SINGER M'YA:
No, I'm not M'ya. I believe she's 18 or so.

MINNIE ON VIDEO:
I know that TVLand or VH1 just aired a performance of hers on the Midnite Special so write in and request that one.

ABOUT THE SOUL-PATROL PAGE:
I'm not an EXTREMELY private person. It's just that the page is about my mother, not about me or the rest of my family and I would rather keep it that way. To me the page is about her brief and amazing career and where she came from. So in that respect I am happy to have been able to answer some of those questions for people. I'm not a recluse or anything, I'm just a normal person.

Other than that Bob, I told my Dad about the site but he does not surf the web. So, I hope you understand my wishes and good luck with everything. Thanks for all your kind words, So there you go. Keep in touch, and thanks again for the site...

Maya

You're welcome Purple .

You know , i was yesterday pointed on the misspelling of Minnie's backname typing

Now i tried to search more footage of her on YouTube with typing "Riperton", wich gave no results .
But with typing "Ripperton" i did find all the footage .
For some strange reason i also thought it was with 2 p's because the Dj's in my country always pronounced it as "ipperton"-sounding . Do more people have that ?

Reminds me of an interview on tv with Barbra Streisand . The interviewer had to lay the accent particular on "sand" . And also for years i thought it was Barbara neutral ..., i'm a mess .

LOL I was thinking the same exact thing, almost as if she doesn't really know her mom...and I know that sounds weird since she died when Maya was so young, but you'd still think she would be glad and willing to be more open about her mom's impact on music and her fans. Odd interview indeed. Thanks C-Note!

Exactly. She doen't even know what's going on with her mother's catalogue. Maybe her dad handles all of that...but still, I would think she would be more knowledgeable than how she came off in that interview.

Or, it could, just simply be that, she simply doesn't want everybody all up in her private business..beyond the discussion of items in the catalo,g she mentioned several times in that interview that she and her family are normal people with private lives...I could understand how she doesn't want the focus to be so much one anything she has to say, rather than simply letting her mother's music and legacy speak for itself. Not everyone takes the Lorna Luft/Nancy Sinatra public approach to their parents' fame. I've seen the children of people like Aretha Franklin, Chubby Checker, and Jimi Hendrix carry themselves in exactly the same manner as Maya Rudolph. No harm, no foul....

I started crying too sad...music affects me waay to much sometimes, I guess.

I idolized this woman from the time I was about 5, until her death. I used to sit in front of the stereo and sing her songs when they came on the radio, as kids we used to sing them on the schoolbus to make the long ass cross-town desegregation ride home just a little bit shorter...we would trade verses amongst all the kids and I was always thrilled cause they would pick me to hit the "whistle note"...God, it was so much fun...I remember feeling very confused when she died. I didn't understand as a child, the concept of how you go from listening to someone on the radio and having their voice take you to magical places, only to have the voice stifled by tragedy and and be told that you'd never hear them sing again because they got sck and went to heaven....in my tiny little child mind, that only happened too regular people, but to the magic voices coming out of the radio? I was so crushed neutral...

...as for the Mariah comparison, I get it and am not offended at all by it. No one is saying that she's here to replace Minnie (no one can, there was only one, and she was a creature of with an instrument of feminine purity and honesty and sensuality that cannot be touched)...however, I think what they're referring to simply is Mariah's ability and tendency to engage the 7th octive in popular music...the whistle register is normally one restricted to opera singing and Mariah, (like Minnie, and inspired very much by Minnie) brings it to the masses. It's a little bit like the comparisons that are made between say, Dianne Reeves and Sarah Vaughan, or Leslie Feist and Jane Birkin, again no one's saying that these ladies are here to replace the originals, rather than simply carry on in the musical styles that inspire their musical technique .
