I'd say it began going downhill in the late 80s,but yeah, the 90s was awful

1984 was the last great year. 1985 was when everything first started going downhill. There were still a few good songs in the late 1980s but not nearly as many as before. By the 1990s, everything was absolutely horrible unless you got into some underground house. Shit hop had completely taken over. Music today doesn't sound any different than it did in around 1993 or 1994.

REM, nine inch nails, hole, smashing pumpkins, the cure...none of these acts would get played today, though in the early-to-mid nineties they seemed to thrive in the mainstream for a short time.

heck, even MADONNA has a hard time getting a top 40 pop hit anymore.

I've always listened to a lot of current music. The only difference being back in the 80s and early 90s, a lot of the music I listened to was also popular. Now the artists I support, radio won't touch with a ten-foot pole. Regina Spektor? The Bellrays? Rasputina? No chance of any of them getting a top 40 hit or going platinum.

IMO Music started to fall off in the early 80's maybe 81 or 82. That's when
the music to me was starting to become less soulful and more cold, synth
driven. Don't get me wrong it was very good music, just not as soulful. I
probably feel that way because I came up in the 60's and 70's. There will
always be some good music around, it's just getting harder to find

I would say music started going downhill once MTV shot into the stratosphere and image overtook art. Say what you will about there always being some form of crap in the mainstream, but in the '60s/'70s, innovation, artistic expression, talent, and genius were in bloom EVERYWHERE. The amount of quality stuff in the '80s/'90s/'00s mainstream just doesn't compare.

I recently heard 2 songs by Regina, and to me her voice sounds too much like Fiona Apple, and frankly I don't think that's a good thing.

I agreed on those who said that there are good music but have to look for it. Yes you have to do some very good digging. Most of the artists that I like today doesn't get airplay.
I am also doing a little feature on myspace page of showcasing my fav current yet underrrated artists who I feel that deserved some recoginition because of their obivious musicial talent. Myspace is like god to some of indie artists to expose their stuff.

But I am with krystal666, who she is the same age as I, about discovering old school artists from the 70s and 80s. I am too busy listening to some rare funk and disco of that era to be moaning about current radio and MTV, BET not playing good music. So whether than just rely on radio or music stations for good music just take a look little deeper and you will discover some current and less known artists kicking ass.

...well, I love lots of 80's stuff , but there's a lot of great stuff nowadays as well, for instance

check:

stones throw (label)
ninja tune (label)
tru thoughts (label)
quantic
forss
herbert
dfa (productions)
radiq
rufus wainwright
me'shell
j dilla
radiohead
goldfrapp
prins thomas/lindstrom

..only it's (totally) different from the 80's .... thank god

ps I think the Gnarls Barkley album is the most overrated album so far this year.. I think they're much better live!

So true! It was around the mid-80s when drum machines and synthesizers began to take over.Rap also became popular around this time.Suddenly, funk bands became obsolete.I hated this time! Honestly,I can't even listen to alot of late-80s music.Much of it sounds cold, formulaic and programmed....as if it was created by robots.

Really? I think she sounds nothing like Fiona. Fiona's voice is much deeper and bluesy.

I don't blame drum machines, synths, and computers for the lack of quality music. I blame how artists/producers use these items to compensate for lack of creativity and musical knowledge.

now, wait-a-minute, Phill Collins, "No Jacket Required" was released in 1985.
and, Hip-Hop music was beginning to bloom and was vital in 85 with Run-DMC and LL Cool J leading the way.

Labels get THOUSANDS of new CDs a WEEK submitted to them and you f**kers have the nerve to say "there's no good music out there"? If you want good music from new sources, stop waiting for record labels to feed you and start looking on places like MySpace.com and stop waiting for the labels to play someone's new video or the radio stations to play the newest payola artist. The nerve of you people! To assume that out of THOUSANDS of artists a week, none of them are any good? The artists are there, its just that people are waiting on Clear Channel to give them what they want. You ain't gonna get a good steak waiting in the line at McDonald's, people. Venture out beyond conventional means. You'd be surprised at what's out there.nod
