What is a "dub"

A lot of times a remix will be labeled as a "dub". What does this mean?

A dub is a remix that is mostly instrumental but with some repetitive phrases, chants or lines thrown in (usually repeated sections of the track). It comes from the term for Jamacan popular music in which audio effects and spoken or chanted words are imposed on an instrumental reggae background.

BedouinSoundClash plays the best dub ever!!!!

http://www.bedouinsoundclash.com

They are really, really good live. Jay Malinowski is an amazing performer and a wonderful person to talk to. He is also a great visual artist who's work is mainly about identity crisis. Very, very cool. cool

My sig is from "Living in Jungles" by the BSC.

i still don't quite understand. there is a thieves in the temple dub
but that's not just the chorus and instruments.

so explain this to me like i'm an idiot (well "like" lol) and let's
take CREAM as an example.

if there were a dub of the diamonds and pearls song "Cream" what
would it sound like/be composed of?

would there be different instruments? pieces of the verses gone or
added? stripped down instrumentation? more bass? what?
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

That kind of dub would have snips of the song running through a background that has variations of rhythms, instumentations ect.Dance mixes are dubs.
DUB is a sub-genre of reggae, they use various special effects to change the natural sound of the music. For example, Bedouin Soundclash's singer, Jay Malinowski uses pedals for his voice for special effects when he's singing live. Go to the BSC site I posted before and listen to them, they're a really good example of dub.
