And for the record, Barbra Streisand has a magnificant live voice and charges up to 1000 big ones for her tickets.

What's the missing link with Mariah's performance? She has a great voice doesn't she? I mean, even with a hugely successful album she has a hell of a time getting rid of tickets. You decide.

That means she should try something she isn't good at? All it tells me is that people prefer spectacle over vocals. shrug

No, i think it means people prefer stage persona. It's not like Mick Jagger has great vocals either, and he doesn't use spectacle either. He just knows how to own a stage.

So we agree basically. I would say the RS certainly do use spectacle. Anyhow, I don't hope Mariah's tour fails. lol

Babs has NO stage presence lmao. She is a lot like Mariah on stage. She just has really old, really rich fans. lol IF she still has her voice, maybe when she's 60 Mariah can charge those prices.

lol

What you can charge all depends on what sort of clientele you cater to. Mariah needs to wait another 10 years and do small venues (like Babs) and then she can charge big bucks if there is demand.

She should be making ties to the gay community, they'll be the ones to stick by her through her old age like they've done for Madge, Babs and Cher.
She's on a commercial high right now, so she's focused with the youth fanbase she has, but they'll move on from one trend to another. It's the truth.
Not to mention, they often have lots of extra dough.

She needs some queeny, well-established fans with apartments on Madison & 5th. cool

biggrin That's what a few tried to say after all her half ass Charmbracelet promo performances. I guess she feels more comfortable in front of her fans. She sounded just fine playing around here on the Charm Tour

However, Mariah at her vocal worst is still better than Madge.

I still stand by my statement.
Mariah certainly has gay fans, but she's gotta make some sort of statement or appear at some AIDS benefit charity concert or something....I don't know if she's done so or not. Even if she's insincere about it, it's a great chance to guarantee album and ticket buyers when you pass the mark of 40.
Of course her ties to the hip hop community is probably witholding her longing desire to wear a rainbow scarf on stage while singing "Hero" sad

Actually, I was being serious lol I think it's helped that some of Madonna's fans are a whole decade older and have stuck by her for 25 years now. Mariah, as you said, has always courted the youth audience but made few lasting fans.

Glindathegood

I like Mariah's voice and some of her earlier stuff. I'm not too crazy about the hip hop influenced stuff of recent years.
But I think her songs are so vocally demanding, that they're very hard to sing well live over the course of her tour. She writes songs thinking about how they will sound on the radio, not considering how they will sound performed live as many other artists do.
Since she doesn't have spectacle, if her voice isn't perfect, basically the whole concert is ruined unlike other artists who have spectacle or can dance or play an instrument. I think Mariah can actually be quite charming in interviews, but somehow she does lack stage presence and personality on stage. Perhaps, it's because she hasn't toured much and lacks confidence.

I went to see that ho in concert in 2003. I went because I heard on the radio that day that the tickets were down to TWENTY DOLLARS a piece, and my friend was selling candy at the show, and I did like the "Glitter" album and some songs from her debut...and basically I had nothing better to do on a Saturday night.

Show was...AWFUL. The choreography, costumes...a huge blow up clown made to look like Eminem for her awful 'diss' song...'Fantasy' with the worst cut rate chair dance and most obvious lip synching I've ever seen...it was GOD AWFUL. The venue was a four thousand seat amphitheater in San Diego and at 20 buck a pop WASN'T EVEN SOLD OUT. The woman can sing, but she cannot put on a decent show to SAVE HER LIFE. It wasn't even like she had a great band and just stood there and gave a soulful show...she tried the extravaganza route and failed. Half the crowd was gone by the encore "Vision of Love."
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Funny because I love the live at MSG DVD. Her bullshit chairs routine is awful, though (she doesn't do it on that DVD).

LOL @ mofos mention Mariah and Maddy on the same sentence (vocally).

You can't make a comparision between apples and oranges.

And LMFAO @ the whole thread(esp the sad ass thread's title).

She is a singer. She gets on stage and sings. Maybe a singer singing is boring to you. Should she set her ass on fire and run around shaking her ass mimicing Tina Turner? ahh nevermind

I think it's no big secret that Miss Mariah knows how to deliver the hits; she definitely has the knack for pinning the little ditties that will take her to the top of the charts. But one thing I've also noticed is that Mariah tends to be heavily R&B oriented, and in a of lot of her unreleased material you find that she wears her childhood and teenage musical influences on her sleeve; when I look at songs like Bliss, Breakdown, and Crybaby, and Fly Like A Bird, that's when I always feel like she's truly in her "place" as a vocalist. I think as a New Yorker who grew up during a certain time in that area, she will always be influenced by (a more commercialized version) of the kind of the r&b and street music that shaped her coming up as a kid in that time and place. She should probably keep doing what makes her feel good as a vocalist vs. pre-orchestrating how to manipulate a specialized catagory of fans 15 years from now just to keep herself awash in stilettos and Caprese vacations....I understand adapting oneself to keep a career going and the big $$$ coming in, but if it doesn't originate authentically from the heart ... hmmm...
