GRASS ROOTS EFFORT LAUNCHED TO SAVE WHITNEY: Los Angeles man wants a ‘national day of support’ for troubled singer.

*While most Whitney Houston fans can do nothing but watch as the one-time singing powerhouse spirals downward from reported substance abuse, one supporter in Los Angeles has decided to do something about it.

Calvin 'Cashears' Shears, a cabaret singer living in the Jefferson Park area, is holding a press conference Monday in Leimert Park to announce the "We Love You, Whitney” Day, which calls for a “national day of support” for the entertainer.

"I hope that at least 50 to 60 cities will get involved," Cashears told Los Angeles newspaper Our Weekly. "We will have the rally nationwide July 1 simultaneously in all of the cities."

"I am contacting radio stations to get the word out about Whitney and I am also sending out letters to people across the country to lend their support," he added. "I'm calling on all "black politicians, ministers, civil rights groups, black radio stations, newspapers, college students and the rest of our people to send a collective message of thunderous love across America to Whitney Houston."

Cashears says his effort is rooted in a profound love of the Grammy-winning diva, or, in his book, “the greatest female voice of all time.”

I'll do whatever it takes to save Whitney," said Cashears, who is promoting the “We Love You Whitney” Day by passing out hundreds of flyers throughout the Los Angeles area featuring photos of the singer looking high and disheveled. A headline on the flyer reads: "She's Crying Out For Help! Will We Save Her?"

Cashears says his street promotion has resulted in dozens of calls from individuals and various groups concerned for the performer. Cashears says Houston’s current state has been exacerbated by the media and its flip coverage of the entertainer’s drug issues.

"Whitney is going through a dark and turbulent period in her life and she is being denigrated and castigated in tabloids, newspapers, on radio and television across America,” he says. “I'm saying to the news media that I'm not going to let you destroy my sister."

Hmm, well who knows, maybe it will get some support and best of all get HER attention...perhaps even inspire her to get her s*** back together!?

I'm not sure how far blaming the media will get them (b/c she's really destroying herself) but hey, if they have the time & will it's a wonderful thing to do for someone.

This actually sounds like a good idea.Hopefully,Whitney will see that so many people still love her and it may inspire her to finally get herself together Why sit around and watch her self-destruct? Her fans need to intervene!

Talk about "The Greatest Love Of All". It's noble and you can have all the Whitney Day's you want but if homegirl doesn't want any help, then it won't mean anything. She will have to WANT to change and no special day can change that if she herself isn't with it.

We Love You, Whitney Day? Gimme a break. Calvin Shears must have a lot of time on his hands. You can love Whitney all you want but until she loves herself enough to get off of drugs or ODs this thing will be an annual event.

That's what I used to call her when she first came on the scene in 1985. Over the years, I've become "politically correct" and started calling her "Shitney".
