Heather Headley: In My Mind

Bought this a few weeks ago, just gave it a spin today. I love the shit outta this girl's voice but she seems to suffer from a lack of good material.

Her last album had 2 good songs on it, this one is nicer on the ear but after 1 mere spin only the title track stands out.

Has anyone else picked it up? Any thoughts? biggrin

i picked this joint up 2 months ago, on the day of its release and it definitely works better than her debut. It shows her incredible range as a singer. The title track just raises the hair of my skin everytime I hear it!

I've heard quality R&B-remixes from different artists in the past .
It depends on how it's done . MAW always puts a lotta soul in their joints .

Heather's a real bjewty btw .

Heather? Souless? You're tripppin'. She has hella soul. In an interview, she once said "I listen to Aretha and think to myself 'I can't sing'" B.S. She can sing her ass off, and with feeling. She's just modest. I liked her first CD but the problem was the production. It could have been much better considering the caliber of singer she is. Her situation is that of most singers in her vein - lack of good production. You can thank rap and record labels for that one. R&B CDs don't get the production budgets they used to anymore.

I completely agree. I love her voice and "He Is" is absolutely beautiful, but the title track of "In My Mind" bores the fuck outta me. yawn I'm not sure if I'll pick up the album.

I think Graycap was referring to the music, not Heather herself (hence the "it's" soulless comment). I love Heather's voice. She's got incredible range. They didn't give her the Tony for nothing! I couldn't get into her first album, because it was a pretty standard R&B grab bag even with talented people behind her. I may eventually try the new one, but for now she's just lost in a boring mix of studio production that's trying to appeal to all too many markets.

I really speaking of most of the tracks from the cd. I really dig her though. She can throw down "live".

A lot of CDs are like that these days. There's usually something missing. Partially because the "hype generation" can't listen to a song that's longer than three minutes and actually get offended when they hear a change in the music and partially because label short change R&B artists across the board.
"He Is" was tight. Very nicely done and wrapped up just before the average teen starts to tune out. I loved the message in the song and the lack of drama and negativity. I'm feeling "In My Mind", too. I haven't checked out the whole CD yet but its in the plan.

There's something about this woman that I can't stand. Both can carry a tune, but there's this pretentiousness about them... something I really can't put my finger on.

You've obviously never seen a Heather headly interview. you couldn't be more wrong. When this CD dropped, VH-1 Soul did a special on her and she was very demure and humble and grateful for just being able to release records, even though in my opinion with her background, she's far more qualified than many women to release records. She was very endearing. Your instincts are off on this chick.

I love her voice. "He is" was my jam, but I can't get into "In My Mind" the song. I don't know, it's just seems stalker-ish to me. shrug

I'll have to check out the rest of the cd.

I still bump "He Is" headbang And I don't think "In My Mind" is stalkerish lol Well, it kinda is but she's not talking about going after the guy. She just still loves him - it helps if you see the video. It's very stark & lonely, it's a very revealing song whoever wrote it nod

I love "In My Mind". I really dig the whole song - lyrics, production, her voice of course - and she definitely deserves top-flight material. I think a big part of the problem these days is that a lot of "producers" aren't musicians and rely on beats/sound/effects moreso than interesting chord changes and arrangements. Listen to Ciara's cd - it sounds so "artificial" - the music is lifeless and her voice is airy as hell.

It's not just r&b, either - a lot of those rock bands aren't that good on their instruments and a lot of their songs are indistinguishable. How many Nickleback songs sound the same? Heck, even when the bands are good musicians, s**t still sounds formulaic. Check out the past few Aerosmith hits. They're all the same song! Most of Bon Jovi's stuff, too. I call it the Desmond Child/Dianne Warren formula...

Okay, enough ranting smile
