What happened to Funk? Hip Hop?

This summer I'm gonna do some specials on my radio show. Two of them will be "What happened to Funk - Hip Hop?" and "New Jack Swing?"

Any idea what the funkiest and most influential Hip Hop in 80s and 90s was?
