That way one vote for Britney Spears at #1 (1 x 50 = 50) would be outweighed by three votes for Marvin Gaye at #25 (3 x 26 = 78) rather than Britney #1 (1 x 25 = 25) and Marvin #25 (3 x 1 = 3). Any math majors here? I don't want anyone to think the results are unfair. Biased, maybe, but not unfair. i can't be expected to read all of that. anything more complicated than "contains 12 individually wrapped snack cakes" is too much math for me.

i nearly included "axis: bold as love" instead of "are you experienced?", but "manic depression" and "third stone from the sun" are just way too incredible, even though i have a soft spot for "axis". No worries. mg loves to be disciplined. I limited my choices to 1 per artist. And you know me, I love all his studio releases. Although AYE? is one of the most amazing musical debuts in history, I went with what was his creative zenith in the studio. tA I dunno, I still think there should be no limits. If you think a second Jimi album is better than half the records on your list, why leave it out? Why punish the man for being so great?

I totally get you. I probably worded that response wrong. If you honestly think that I believe that Bif Naked's 'I Bificus' is a better album that 'Sgt. Pepper's', then I'm really no more credible than the guy who filled his entire list with Prince records. My list is definitely my favorite records that I listened to and connected with the most as opposed to ones I think were groundbreaking and flawless. That would be very boring--all Beatles, Hendrix some Clash, Nirvana...

I never really specified whether it should be your choices for the "greatest" albums or your "favorite." Those two lists should overlap a bunch anyway. I think my favorites are pretty great. But I did leave Miles & John Coltrane off. They'd be in my top 50 favorite, but higher on my choices for greatest. My Legacy

TA's choices were indeed pretty exquisite, but there's definitely a leaning toward certain styles of music. nothing wrong with that, but as "greatest albums" go, it's a pretty subjective approach (not that i think he had any designs on obbjectivity, and i do agree that he chose his personal faves). i could make a list of what i think are the "greatest" albums ever and someone would surely respond similarly to me. [Edited 6/5/06 11:03am] Well, nobody can be totally objective. I guess he didn't have much after 1980, but he had Jazz, Rock, R&B, blues, avant garde, folk, all pretty well represented. I'm not saying they are THE greatest albums ever (I haven't even heard them all), but he came pretty close to what a team of critics might come up with. Also he had no classical, but I'd argue that those albums are not often classic recordings, but are more likely just recordings of classic music (though I'm sure there are exceptions). My Legacy

I did my best to imaging I could only keep 25 albums for the rest of my days, here's what I came up with:
1. Prince: Sign O the Times 2. Elvis Costello: Blood and Chocolate 3. Frank Zappa: Hot Rats 4. Stevie Wonder: Songs in the Key of Life 5. Jimi Hendrix: Electric Ladyland 6. The Beatles: The White Album 7. The Rolling Stones: Let it Bleed 8. Van Morrison: It's Too Late To Stop Now... 9. Frank Zappa: Uncle Meat 10. David Bowie: Young Americans 11. Pink Floyd: The Wall 12. Afghan Whigs: Black Love 13. Built To Spill: Perfect From Now On 14. Prince: Parade 15. R.E.M. : Life's Rich Pageant 16. Siouxsie and the Banshees: Tinderbox 17. Flaming Lips: The Soft Bulletin 18. Neil Young: Tonight's the Night 19. Husker Du: Warehouse: Songs and Stories 20. Smashing Pumpkins: Siamese Dream 21. Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 22. Kate Bush: Hounds of Love 23. Elvis Costello: My Aim is True 24. Modest Mouse: Lonesome Crowded West 25. XTC: Skylarking 26. Dead Kennedys: Plastic Surgery Disasters 27: Led Zeppelin: Houses of the Holy 28: Roxy Music: Country Life 29: David Bowie: Stationtostation 30: XTC: English Settlement 31: The Clash: London Calling 32: Jimi Hendrix: Axis: Bold as Love 33: John Coltrane: Live at the Village Vanguard 34: Frank Zappa: Lather 35: Neil Young: Zuma And then I just kept typing. I think it would also be interesting, since no one can even decide on their favorite artists' best albums, to tally up an 'artists' top 50 based on the points garnered. Just a thought.
