Ego I'm sure.
But she said in an interview once that she only agreed do produce that album. After that, she decided to move on.

I shouldn't be posting this on a message board but I didn't make the deal, so here goes:
Raphael wanted Dawn for Lucy Pearl but she was still locked into a contract. He paid over a mil to buy her contract out amd midway through the record she starts trippin'. She started getting "diva-ish' and making outrageous money demands before the project is even finished and by the time its all done, Saddiq is fed up with her but business is business. I believe Dawn was wanting to do her solo record right around the time but had no producers. I don't know the extent of the personal aspects of that (whether or not Saddiq was hittin' that or not or whatever) but I know that he dropped her with her still owing him at least a mil five and the label on his ass for another record. He recruited joi and went on about work. This came back to bite her in the ass when she dropped her solo CD. She got new management and found a producer to do most of her CD. Dude did a good job but they wanted her to have someone reputable to drop a single on the CD and they had a HARD time finding a well known producer who would work on her shit because Raphael had already spread the word on her so peeps weren't touching her. She is now known throughout the industry as a bitch to work with. Damn, I feel a little guilty for putting her business out like that but f**k it. Karma's a mutha. [Edited 6/5/06 10:50am]

The way I heard it, Dawn agreed to do the one album and assumed that the group would go their separate ways afterward. Then Raphael wanted to continue the group and saw it as an opportunity to bring in someone else he really liked (Joi).

As GOD as my witness, I know a cat who's an engineer who knew Dawn's man at that time. I was trying like hell to hook up with this cat in an effort to write some material for Dawn, but it never happened. I always dug Dawn the most out of EvVogue annd she was the only one who came off the most legit doing that horrible version of "Free Your Mind". I despise that track cuz musically, it was goofy. The lyrics were bangin' but not the music. It wasn't even on Janet's "Black Cat" which I thought was goofy as well. But at least Dawn came off like she could handle some rock, which was purely why I was interested in putting together some tracks for her. Agreed. Her voice is the one that stood out. Unfortunately, I've heard a few times that her reputation precedes her.

I was working at a Virgin Megastore at the time LUCY PEARL came out. They did an in-store signing at our store one day they were in town opeining for D'Angelo...The first thing we heard from management was that Dawn would NOT sign anything En Vouge-related. We went up and down the line to make sure fans had only the LP record to get signed. I was standing at one end of the signing table when a girl pulled out a 'Funky Divas' CD for her to sign. You would have thought she asked her for her kidney with the face she made. She did sign the cd but was very annoyed for the rest of the event.
Having said that, she was sweet as hell to me as she hung out in my office...we talked about music and how hot AZ freaking is in the summer (it was August when this event happened)...later that night we went to the show and were able to hang out backstage with the band...they were all super cool. peace Every minute of last night is on my face today....

I remember Dawn pushing her solo album and saw the video exactly once. I thought the song was a little weak but thought maybe she'd have some success being that alot of people favored her out of EnVogue but I can't even remember seeing the CD in stores. It may not be fair to blame her but I always felt like she was key to the friction in the group. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Wasn't she supposed to be signed to Aftermath (Dr. Dre's label) at one point as well? And the SAME thing happened?????

I'm not doubting BlaqueKnights recollection... but Ali Shaheed seems to place majority of the blame on Saadiq too. According to his camp, Saadiq was the "diva"...
Either way they were and are respectively still the shit. In the end nobody really bought any of their solo joints. Q-Tip was supposed to join the fold too. [Edited 6/5/06 13:13pm]

Yeah, Shaheed doesn't even like to talk about the LP experience. He cops a sheepish smile and then goes on to something else. Now you know when you get THAT quiet dude to switch subjects then it MUSTA been some shit that went down. The En Vogue broads say the same thing..Dawn is just ard to work with, but I also heard that Saadiq was extra slow/late on paying them as well, so that could have something to do with it. Whatever it was, they fucked up a great group. That album is the shit! Living to die and I'll die to live again - 360 degrees - comprehend
