Z Cult Favorites/Pink Floyd "Another Brick In The Wall"/Rod Stewart "Passion"/The Who "Eminent Front"

Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall" has to be one of the coolest songs ever. It has everything; a cool funk bassline, a cool riff, a great lead guitar solo and one of the most potent yet coolest verses and hooks in rock. When those children come in, with their English accents, it takes the song to another level. This song was so good, it spawned a few other great songs in it's wake. Rod Stewart's "Passion" and The Who's "Eminent Front". The guitars in both of these songs owe a big nod to David Gilmour style on "Another Brick". I don't think these two songs would have happened if it wasn't for "Another Brick". But I'm glad they did. The bass playing on "Passion" is off the hook and the lyrics are classic. Definately one of my faves from Stewart. I used to walk around grade school when this song came out, just blurting out "New York, Moscow", Hong Kong, Tokyo" "Even the President Needs". Anyway, who else digs these 3 what I call "British Styled Funk" songs?

Yo Black, I too dig the hell out of those songs, but my memories were a bit different than your's, I wasn't in the schoolyard but going through a bitter divorce at the time which kinda gave Rod's song special meaning for me.

I dig 'em. Pete's playing on (the live MTV version of) "Emimence" is killer. He's compin' chords, doing octaves, and just playing bluesy, funky notes all over. I saw the video not too long ago and forgot how tasteful he was. And Gilmour's solo at the end of "Brick" is insane. His huge Strat tone is just so right. That's a solo EVERY guitarist should know!

Yep, sorry for the "Eminent" part. "Eminence" IS indeed correct. I always called it "Eminent" for some reason. But ya'll knew what I meant just the same.

Yeah, that's how I first got into Pete's playing, too. I remember trying to catch the whole video so I could tape it and learn his licks. I also wanted (still want) one of those cool Schecter PT teles that he was playing - even Jesse Johnson sported a couple (pink, of course).

David Gilmour is a great guitarist. I have fond memories of learning the guitar parts to "Another Brick In The Wall". So funky...

The version of Comfortably Numb that still blows me away is on The Delicate Sound of Thunder when all the tension is built up and that guitar solo just....damn!!It blows you away!!One of the most emotion inspiring jams I have ever heard!

Damn. Sorry to hear about that. I hope you found some kind of solice through that. That's really what music should do, I think. To aid a persons soul. If it's done right and it's coming from the right place, it's basically God touching folks. True, it does depends on a persons state of mind, too.

Agreed. I remember not really even paying too much attention to the cut when it was first released. It wasn't untill I too saw the live version of them in some airplane hanger, most likely rehearsing for a tour and just used that for the video. Pete is throwing down. I was like "Dang!" That's what made me go get that sucker! Gilmore, aaaah, he's ALWAYS been a fave of mine and a major influence. All of his solos on that whole album is some of his best playing.

Nice post. I can relate to that. As great as that solo is, ya'll shouldn't sleep on the solo to "Mother". That solo is so fucking beautiful, it's stupid. As short as it is, David worked that sucker to death. Very, very melodic and his choice of notes are brilliant. He could have went a few different ways but the road he took was perfect. Gilmour is no joke.
