Music beyond borders and labels ...
I noticed that if a lot of my favorite artists have a common link, it's that they don't fit into boxed categories, never acknowledging the "you play this type, or that type of of music" sterotypes and labels that critics, (and even fans) use to label them... "you're a 'jazz' artist/ you're 'rock'--you're a 'funk' artist/ you play black/white music, etc... "Keep a foot in each camp long enough, Johnny, and pretty soon they'll build the barbed wire right through you...." (- Leigh Drayton, Funeral In Berlin) hat's off to 'em, and here are just a few of those that refuse to fit the peg ... from top: Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, Joni Mitchell (with Herbie Hancock, Don Alias, Gene Perla, and Michael Brecker), Jaco and Herbie, Todd Rundgren Pat Metheny, Maurice White, Fishbone, Stevie Wonder, Rotary Connection, Jean Paul Bourelly, Meshell Ndegeocello and Spirit Music Jamia, Bernie Worrell, Quintessence, Soulive, David Sylvian, Kate Bush, Carlos Santana, Lewis Taylor, Frank Zappa, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Miles Davis, Jonatha Brooke, D'angelo, Herbie and Joni, Q-tip, Bobby McFerrin, Laura Nyro, Foley, Hefner (w/Josee) , Quincy Jones, Jeff Beck, Hiram Bullock, David Sanborn and Marcus Miller, Level 42, George Clinton, Peter Gabriel, Rickie Lee Jones, William "Bootsy" Collins, Stanley Clarke & Chaka Khan, Funkadelic, Cassandra Wilson, Prince, Betty Davis, Bjork, 24-7 Spyz, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, Michel Colombier ... i was just listening to talking heads' live version of "found a job" and thinking that it may well be one of the funkiest things i've ever heard.
meanwhile, most of the funkheads around here dismiss them as some new wave artsy fartsy alternative band. their loss i guess, but still...

I don't believe in music beyond borders and labels. I think it's reasonable to think that all music can be exactly categorized under some musical genre. For instance my own band is Death IDM/Electro-Power Electronics/Ambient Industrial/Industrial/Post-industrial - and that's the way I like it.

They are new wave artsy fartsy, but they could be really funky, too! That's what makes them great to me. If people aren't willing to hear that, you're right...their loss. Found a Job is hot, and so is Stop Making Sense. I've not watched it in a while, and now I have the urge. Paligap - I had no idea you were a Bjork fan. I...have no idea. That's all I can say about that.

But I love her musical imagination... It's funny, I've heard a number of "funk" and "jazz" artists mention that they listen to her stuff, and I think it's for the same reasons... they respect people that are out there doing something original and innovative... ... I've said it before, but I appreciate Bjork more than I like her. I own one album and a CD single. It's the extremes on either end that make for the (sometimes) happy medium that is pop music.
