Why can't most Rappers dance?

IMO, that's the very thing that got Hammer over.

I believe people got tired of seeing the same old Rap routine.
Some dude/dudette roaming aimlessly back and forth across the stage with other dudes just standing there with their arms folded for no good reason at all.

His early videos with just the Oaktown357 girls were just visually more interesting than the above.

Nobody is saying the cat could rap, he had an act.

but do you think singers today are using dancing to cover up thier weak singing ability?

I think record companies today are using everything they can to cover up for non-talent.

if Hammer knew how to rap he would have been dangerous, because his first LP was funky and classic.Hammer was a great performer, and he knew he was the best dancer in the business, sorry Mike Jack fans, Hammer would have destroyed Mike on the dancing tip,

The only artists that I like who can't sing is Nico and she had great ppl behind her. I like dancers like Bobby Brown and Hammer, but only casue they put on a good show.

but you do like Prince, and you might like James Brown, and neither are considered good singers, and almost all of Prince understudy's with the exception of Rosie werent good singers, and were pushed by Prince to sing because Prince use to tell them how easy it was

As somebody has surely already suggested, dance in today's music is surely a gimmick (case in point, Christopher Walken in whatever video that was). Off the top of my head, I'd say it became gimmicky just after the height of the popularity of music videos. Maybe in the early 90s.

Early on, Princce wasn't a good singer, but he matured into an excellent singer with diverse vocals. He's an amazing dancer and most importantly a great musician.

if you think he is a great singer that is on you, but Prince sounded just like Al B SUre when he used is falsetto and nobody was calling Al B a great singer by any strech, and i love how you used the word diverse,

all i know is i think Bobby Brown(DBC era) sang like Wilson pickett, but some may not think Bobby is a good singer

it is what you consider good or great singing

So do Bobby & Hammer play instruments or sing (well), or should they sit their asses down?

Dancing became integral for pop stars with the rise of MTV. It doesn't matter if you can sing, as long as you can look good and move well in a video. There have always been pop stars who couldn't carry a tune, and there always be - it's just that the mode of packaging them has changed.

Bobby does play the piano. But Hammer and Bobby are the rare performer who can carry a show without singing well.

I didn't say Prince was a great singer, I acknowledge early on that he was lacking, but you can deny he improved. On his worst day, P was better than Al B.

The thing that strikes me is that there used to be really dynamic, accomplished performances from stars who used dancing as a selling point, and we don't even have that, anymore. This is why people like Janet & Madonna have lasted so long.

I think for some artists dancing is as integral as playing a musical instrument is with some other artists. Ya know some great rock performers might be great musicians, but they might not have the strongests voices compared to people who are just vocalists, period. I look at at the artists who dance and use dancers as similar to musical theatre. Or maybe like these artists are into putting on a production--you know hose old MGM movie musicals (White Christmas) where everyone was putting on a show. It's not necessarily a gimmick, but the performance enhanced with dancing can sell the song. It's like the dancing becomes part of the musical experience.

OK so I find Chuck Berry's dancing entertaining, but he's also a great musician.
