Hall & Oats=Fathers of NeoSoul?

They were the first to migrate the folk/rock element with the Philly/Motown sound...

and durint their Musicians interview (Bravo) Daryl pointed out how they were the first artist to use samples, synths and digital sounds yet used them in an *organic* fashion...

So I pose the guestion...if these soulful brothers were black, would they be considered the Fathers of NeoSoul? And while we are at it, do they recieve the recognition within the R&B medium for their contributions to music..Afterall, they are the largest selling duo act of all times...and the majority of their hits were also R&B hits...

and now that I think of it, why dont these guys get much recognition period...these guys were awesome...and still are!!!

Daryl Hall & John Oates were once referred 2 as "blue-eyed soul". With songs like "One On One", "Sara Smile", "She's Gone", "Rich Girl", "Wait For Me" and "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)", they hit the charts several times in the 80's.

I had the opportunity 2 see them live back then, and they were fantastic! I was huge fan, buying a lot of their stuff back in the day.

When I 1st heard them on the radio, I went 2 the store looking 4 that new group, "Holland Oats". Luckily, the clerk knew of who I was looking 4... biggrin

I'd like 2 see something new coming from them myself...good thread SkletonKee!

This is a serious question? Umm, Mr. Hall may want to check out some 1970s synth dominated ORGANIC music by Stevie Wonder if that's what he said.

I'm sure they'd be considered fathers of SOMETHING ...if they could get more recognition at all. But that says more about America than it does Hall & Oates.

And I'm a Hall & Oates fan.

Hall and Oates were great. Sara Smile, Rich Girl, Maneater . All were very big hits. It's sad that people just come and go. One minute your'e hot Next your not. Everybody was hot in 1984 and 1985. The American Music Awards and Grammys had so many acts performing it was amazing. And remember Julian Lennon ??? Lionel Ritchie was really big then Cyndi Lauper. Remember Shannon??? Remember Billy Ocean??? Where are they??? Are they still recording??? And my favorite AH SHALIMAR!!! Where are they??? THey were So Cool!!! Dancing in the Sheets... Remember Nia peoples and Party Machine and Elisa Fiorello I'm On the way UP??? She was good but nothing really happened too much for her after that song written by Prince. And remember Telepathy??? And what happened to that Kenny Rogers song Prince worked on with him? Enquiring minds want to know... By the way what's the real story between Prince and Madonna? Supposedly Sean Penn kicked in a door at Madonna's house because she was with Prince. Did they???

Yeah Vagina...I remember Shalamar, "Dancing In The Sheets", "Second Time Around", "A Night To Remember" etc... they were great!

Jodie Watley went on 2 win a grammy 4 "Best New Artist" on her solo album in the 90's. Where is she now? I haven't the foggiest.

Howard Hewitt went on 2 cocaine abuse and the poor house b4 cleaning up his act. He is now making the Lord happy with gospel music...and successfully, I might add.

Lionel Ritchie? Motown/Universal is getting ready to remaster his 1983 landmark album 'Can't Slow Down'.It will now be an expanded 2-CD set filled with bonus tracks and other goodies.

Shannon? Oh yes,I remember her hits "Let The Music Play"(1983) and "My Heart's Divided"(1984).She now records as an independent artist.Don't know whatever happened to billy Ocean, but I remember playing his 'Suddenly' album (1984) to death...lol...some great tunes on that one!

Shalamar? In 1996,Babyface got the three members (Jody Watley,Howard Hewitt, and Jeffrey Daniels) back together to perform on his remake of their 1981 hit "This Is For The Lover In You".In 1999,all three members temporarily reunited for a few gigs in Europe, opening for Earth Wind and Fire.Jody continues to release new music independently, and Howard still performs regularly.Last year,Rhino released an excellent compilation of his solo hits (remember his 1986 hit "I'm For Real"?).

Kenny Rogers recorded a Prince-written song called "You're My Love".It appears on his 1986 album 'They Don't Make Em' Like They Used To'.

Madonna was dating Prince in early 1985,around the same time that she began an affair with Sean Penn! When Sean got pissed and punched a hole in the walls of Madonnas' apartment,Prince offered to come over and patch up the hole. This is one of those gossipy tabloid stories that may or may not be true...lol...

great topic on one of my favorite bands of all time.
they had their pop hits, but they were definately SOUL.

i remember growing up and thinking that they were a black r&b group until i actully saw one of their album covers.

i mean listen to sara smile, shes gone, rich gone, one on one, i cant go for that. beautiful music from a band that i feel never got their props.

i could go on forever.

thanks again for a topic that involves music and not a bunch of petty gossip.

My mom is a little, superstitious, Italian lady who loves to play the state lotto...whenever she heard "One on One" back in the day she would swear that she needed to play 101 in the state lottery...and that she would win!

I love Hall & Oats!!! They are my 3rd favourate group. There is something about their music that just speaks to me. I get almost the same high as I do when I listen to Prince. I'm so glad someone opened up this topic. They definitely had soul. I love them. Speaking of soul, Sade is pretty cool too.
