I remember being soo afraid when In Utero came out because I loved Nevermind so much and had heard reports that it was 'unlistenable'. The first time I played it I was relieved. I really like Scentless Apprentice and Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, but Heart Shaped Box is a great song and probably their best video.

It does remind of a miserable time in my life though so I don't listen to it very often, whereas listening to Nevermind for me is like remembering what it would be like to find the holy grail.

you know, geffen HATED steve albini's production on "in utero" because he mixed the vocals way down like he did with pj harvey's "rid of me", and geffen thought it would make for a difficult follow-up to "nevermind" on the pop charts...so they had to release a version of the album with watered-down production.

i would LOVE it if they released the full-on albini version.

In retrospect, I like Nevermind better. But this album was a very personal favorite at the time. Nobody had a greater influence on me then.

Nevermind is a better pop album, but In Utero shows what an artist Kurt was that he didn't get more mainstream with his success--just the opposite. The album was like Plastic Ono Band--a guy letting you hear his most personal thoughts & feelings, warts & all.

I was figuring out myself at the time, and Kurt was my hero. When he killed himself, it scared me becaused I wanted to be just like him. It changed my life, and I had to stop being so unhealthy & so negative. It seemed cool to be that way, but when that's the end result, it's not so cool!

oh, by the way - even though the original albini mix got nixed by geffen, i still love 'in utero' - i think the songwriting is far more interesting than 'nevermind'.

A bit more creative in spots, maybe, but seems less finished in spots, too. And I know this is hardly a criticism to a lot of people, but I think In Utero (apart from a couple of songs) can only be appreciated by a very specific audience of Nirvana fans. Nevermind can be appreciated on more levels, from pop to punk to classic rock & heavy metal.

i agree. i think nevermind is more accessible - and i'm saying that in the best way possible, mmkay - but i think in utero has more little details and hooks and subtleties.

While Nevermind is a steady plateau of goodness, I think In Utero dips higher and lower in terms of greatness.

I agree with this description, though our opinions differ slightly.

While I would say the best songs on In Utero are only just as good as the best songs on Nevermind (and the lesser songs are worse than the lesser songs on Nevermind), I think In Utero is seperated by being a unique portrait of the artist--something that's essential to the mythology of Kurt Cobain.
