To the moderators I apologize. Once again I have started a thread with the intentions to enlighten some of our orgers in regard to the vase varity of music only to have "teeny bobbers" get offended with their strict diet of "pop music" taste. Again I apologize to those who's musical taste goes no further than Billboards Top 100. I apologize, I apologize, I apologize.

Do yall realize that less that 1% of all new music that gets recorded ever get played on mainstream radio? Judging from the topics on this forum I seriously doubt that many of you get your music from any other source than from mainstream radio. Otherwise why would you be interested in those artist? I certainly hope you're not directing ANY of this towards me, because who ever said that I have a "strict diet of "pop music taste"? I don't happen to like any of those that you mentioned. Anyway, MJ, Janet, and whatever other pop stars you mentioned aside...what IS your point anyway? Are you whining because people don't have DIVERSE enough music taste here for your liking? Or that they don't have enough "musical knowledge"? Or that they don't like more obscure artists? Because if you've "heard everything" like you said earlier, than I don't see what the problem is here. EVERYTHING has been discussed here in this forum. And I mean damn near everything. So what have you been doing this whole time? Sitting on your ass lurking the whole time? You said you don't waste your time reading about artists you don't like or even bother listening to them. Following that logic, what do you like about 2 artists or something and that's why you can't post here because nothing else is "good music" worth discussing to you? So all of the other non-pop music (in every genre possible!) that is discussed here also isn't good enough then because it doesn't happen to be your cup of tea? Because if it was, you should be posting on those threads then, right? You know, there ARE other ways to go about educating the people that you think need it so desperately. This thread is not one of them. Yeah mkay bye. redundancy edit that I didn't clear up [Edited 5/29/06 11:45am] "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

The reason why it makes more sense to discuss Michael Jackson and his dented cheeks is because more people know something about the topic, have their opinions about it and are able to joke on it. And then again this is just indeed one form of cultivating your social needs (Internet forums do not really exist for the sakes of scientific study, do they?). Now I personally have no idea what 70% of the artists whose music I like listening to even look like. I mean, it's really hard to try discussing their appearance.
We could be continuously starting threads on whether the guitar player from .Godspeed You Black Emperor! is using a Boss distortion pedal or a Hughes & Kettner one, but humans are not built to sustain interest on such topics for far too long periods. Seriously, after a while you should see why it makes much more sense to revert back into talking about Michael Jackson's dented cheeks.

Maybe I can start a thread discussing different recordings of the Beethoven Symphonies and stop the time it takes to drop to page 2 (probably about 30 minutes). Oh, and did the guy use a Boss distortion pedal now or not?

I don't even know what's popular on radio now, nor do I care. I quit acknowledging radio in the mid-90s when alternative went out the door and bubblegum pop started dominating the airwaves again.
I don't have time for corporate pop and I think the way new acts are marketed and then forgotten is pathetic, so I don't engage in it. I like what I like, and every now and then I discover someone new who's worth enjoying.

I pretty much agree with the original statement.
There are only truly a handful here who aren't riding the pop bandwagon, and I've been here a long time... Most of the threads are either pop or funk... But then you get some worthwhile threads here too sometimes which is why I hang around... But when someone says Dannii Minogue is better to listen to than the Beatles.... and people start agreeing... that's when I think this site has a lot of people who don't really know too much about music and/or have bad taste, to be honest! But as I say, it's not all Dannii Minogue fans either. . [Edited 5/29/06 19:10pm]

i listen to tons of obscure stuff, but what is wrong with pop music? Nothing.
There is zero reason to be a musical snob. I can listen to N Sync and enjoy it and I can listen to Abbey Road and enjoy it. Everyone listens to music for different reasons. What difference does it make?

What difference does it make? I agree. I'm really am not a pop fan, at least of pop music today, but I just hate it when someone tries to come off as if they are "above" everyone else because they think their music taste is better than others. I mean, we can all THINK some pop artists are total crap and not understand their huge followings, but it's another thing to start threads about it. The person who does something like that just comes off looking more the fool than anyone. Usually, most artists ands bands get record deals and get played on radio because they are good. This means that those artists who aren't being played on radio, and who aren't having their albums distributed by a major label, (unless they are purposely staying away from mainstream music) aren't as good as those who are being played on radio. So why are you wasting your time on bands that just aren't good enough? Again, not all mainstream artists are being promoting because they are musically good, and not all indie bands are indie because they aren't good enough (some would just rather not get into mainstream music). But in general, good bands get played on radio, those who aren't played on radio are just not good enough.
