How the Beatles destroyed pop.

Apparently, this huge Beatles fan thinks that because of their amazing brilliance, the Beatles ruined pop music by creating some unattainable standards for other artists to reach, much like Prince did tonight on American Idol.

Doesn't Stevie Wonder's 70's output rival/overshadow The Beatles 60's output?

in terms of a run of consistently high quality albums, yes. But in terms of the scope of innovation and style and influence, no.

This argument is more about the Beatles fans being so in love with their own love. The Beatles set unattainable standards for their fans so that no other music sounds as good to their fans. And what Beatles fans think MUST apply across the board. I know we Prince fans can be pretentious at times, but this takes the cake.

If what they say is true, then the Beach Boys destroyed pop. Because as I understand it, Pet Sounds informed Sgt. Pepper.

Not as much as people think, and Brian wilson said Rubber Soul was part of his inspiration for Pet Sounds anyway

Dylan, the Byrds and Motown all informed Rubber Soul

I do not believe pop destroyed itself. I think pop evolved into other things, the public's tastes changed, culture and mores of the world changed.....
Food for thought, that is, and it has the potential to be a healthy and rigorous conversation... hmmm

It could be that the Beatles demostrated how pop was supposed to be & maybe artists like Paula Abdul & Britney were the ones who killed it.

I dunno.

Two acts I could never get into: The Beatles and Miles Davis.
Both are considered the greatest of all time, but I just can't get into them.

I can buy that.

But the point still is, that the Beatles aren't the end-all and be-all of pop music. And it's colossally silly for Beatles fans -- or fans of ANY artist -- to even imply as such.

Beatles...no depth. I've no real emotional attachment to their music. Stevie Wonder on the other hand...genius.

True. The Beatles were very profolic song-writers but apart from some of their songs, I don't hear much depth in their songs at all. Give me songs from Motown any day, which imo carry more depth and emotion..

It's one thing to say you don't like the Beatles, but to say their songs have no depth is just absurd. It's like saying "I don't like AC/DC" vs. "AC/DC was such a weak soft rock band"
