I have a lot of vinyl copies of Frank Zappa stuff....have you ever listened to "200 Motels"? That is one of my favorite of Zappa's and the Mother's of Invention....that and "Hot Rats"....
'Avant Garde' is a strange term because as soon as it is used as a descriptive term for an artist, because our world/culture changes so rapidly that whatever you are describing becomes non-avant garde the minute it is used..... But Frank Zappa...he was definitely avant garde and he stayed that way....for more years than can be counted. "Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive."

There will never be another Zappa, that is for sure....
My brother turned me on to him when we were in college in the early 70's and I have been a fan ever since..... He will go down in musical history as one of the greats of all time - as a performer, musician, composer, lyricist. And he fits in no specific category, which makes him even more unique. Zappa's discordant style, coupled with rock, punk, his off the hook jazz and his humoristic approach to music, life and people in general make him one-of-a-kind. A strange thing happened to me... I used to be a huge fan... but for some time now (already more than a year), I see myself being out of Zappa. I have some old Mothers on my Creative Zen, as well as some loose mp3s of his later stuff, but I did not put his later works as a whole on the Zen. I really love the man, his music... but it has changed considerably.
Hell, what's wrong with me? I have more than 35 albums (the Ryko releases), but - it's hard for me now to put him in my top 10. But he should be there. | |
