Cate to play Bob Dylan

Actress Cate Blanchett, known for her roles as Katharine Hepburn in 'The Aviator' and elfin beauty Galadriel in the 'Lord Of The Rings' film, is to play Bob Dylan.

The Australian confirmed yesterday, the day before the veteran singer's birthday, that her next role would be as a young Dylan.

She would be but one of several actors representing different aspects of Dylan's life and music, each portraying him in a different guise, in the film 'I'm Not There'.

To be directed and co-written by Todd Haynes ('Velvet Goldmine'), it is the first Hollywood movie on his life that Dylan has authorised.

The film will eschew the traditional biopic format for an "evocation of Dylan’s various persona, his public image and what he expresses in his songs”, according to the film-makers.

Blanchett is to play Dylan as an androgynous folk star (before his 1966 motorcycle accident) who falls for Coco Rivington, a model played by Michelle Williams.

Williams, who was Oscar-nominated for 'Brokeback Mountain' is joined in the new film by her partner Heath Ledger, who replaces Colin Farrell. Ledger was also nominated for his role in 'Brokeback'.

Others in the all-star cast playing evocations of Dylan include Christian Bale ('Batman Begins') and Richard Gere.

Julianne Moore is also signed to appear.

Haynes, who persuaded Dylan to sell him the rights to his music and life story two years ago, plans to start filming in Montreal in July.
